Hello. I got severel sets of dumbells (3lb, 5lb, 8lb, and 10lb), and was wondering what kind of exercises I can do with them. I would obviously buy heavier ones as the others get too easy, but these are what I started out with. I want things that work upper body. And maybe a good explination or a picture of how to do them, because I don't want to injure myself trying....HAha.. Thanks
Stacey

Have you tried looking at Shapefit (Exercise section) They have pictures for you and a detail descriptions of their workout.
You can find it by sections: Back, Chest, Arms, Shoulders, Legs, etc..
Example:

Since you are a member, you can keep track of your workouts!
A lot of people like to do Squats, lunges, deadlifts, rows, push ups, pull/chin ups, bench press, shoulder/military press, pull downs.
Hope that helps!

You can get some basic conditioning with these, but to acquire strength will require greater resistance than the poundages indicated.
I worked out for 6 months once using nothing but dumbbells. But the resistance was quite high and the results were impressive.
You will probably need to go to 20 or 30 pounds for some of the exercises (maybe higher if you get really strong).

I know what you mean, Broccoli, I am very weak also. I am tiny and have never had any upper body strength. I am working on it, though. At this point I am stuck at 15 lb dumbells. The next ones up are 20 and too heavy.
I am hoping I can get there soon. I can do about 5 push-ups now, though (real ones!). Never could do any before.

Horse back riding is pretty rigorouss work (for the horse at any rate). If you do any posting then your legs are strong.ilurvebroccoli wrote:Well I am currently very weak.....like, a 7 year old girl haha. So I figure 10lbs will be limit for at least a month. Then when I get a job I will start getting heavier weights. Or maybe a nifty gym membership.
You only have to get your upper body to catch up.

you'd be better off starting with bodyweight lunges, step ups etc, prone holds and push ups then add resistance when needed

Yes I do about 20 minutes of posting trot a day, as well as about 10 minutes of trot, canter, and jumping without any stirrup irons. So it's safe to say legs are about rocks under the small layer of fat lol. The extent of upper body strength is smacking horse and picking up jumps and carrying them around the arena to set them up....Packard wrote:Horse back riding is pretty rigorouss work (for the horse at any rate). And Sandi, I can do about 4 "real" pushups lol. I once did 20, but it took a half an hour to accomplish.
I will take the advice of ya'll. Maybe I can do some bench presses with mah horse. Oh yeah.
