I need advice re weight training & cardio 4 weight loss

Post by fabulouswoman »

Hi, I'm new to Shapefit.com,

I need some advice in terms of the best way to work out to lose weight and tone up. I currently do mainly cardio: interval running on a track and I use the stationary bike and cross trainer.

Despite training and eating well, I didn't lose any weight last week and I'm looking for a workout that will ensure success. What is the best workout using weights/ weights machines to add to cardio to maximise weight loss? and how often should I do it, please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

weight is a number on a scale..... that said, how did your tape measurements look?..............

Okay, for visualization.....

a golf ball and a beach ball..... which is bigger? ....... Which weighs more? ..... which is stronger? ...... Which is harder/more dense?
Which do you think demonstrates muscle and which do you think demonstrates fat?

So, you could weigh the exact same from week to week to week and change your appearance but possibly not change your weight more than a few pounds either way.....

Picture a scale needle waving back and forth trying to zero in on your weight, like its guessing... back and forth, back and forth.... hypnotizing you..... making you believe it will tell you the truth...

Now pretend that scale has layers of dust on it with no footprints.... and there on the wall is a mirror and on the table next to the mirror is a cloth tape measure...... the measurements don't bounce on a tape measure, they don't swing either way.... and that mirror... well its just you... see yourself change... a picture is worth a thousand words.... take pictures of yourself month to month...

Weight Index charts don't work for the majority of the population, body fat % tests do. Mirrors work for everyone except us vampires :) and tape measures do as well. If you truely want to have accurate measurements of success, loose the scale and pick-up a tape measure, a camera and a mirror. You will truely see the results of your hard work!

Best of luck to you in reaching your goals! Although, I am sure luck will have nothing to do with it, but rather your hard work and perserverence!

Cheers

At the start of a diet you often end up losing a good bit of water weight due to reduced salt and spices in the diet. But the body wants to maintain homostasis so it will adjust and try to regain the water.

So don't pay too much attention to the scale on a daily basis. But you should see a trend.

So if week one you see (for example)

155, 154, 156, 155, 154, 154, 154 (pounds)

Then you would hope for something like this for week 2:

154, 153, 154, 153, 153, 152, 153 (pounds)

(A trend downwards, but with little bounces up an down).

Scales do help us figure out body fat % and such but they are inaccurate.... I usually recommend (as do many doctors/dieticians) that once a week is all you should be using one... use at the same point of the day in the same circumstances on the same scale. ie, when you wake up on friday morning before breakfeast and after using the facilities you step on your scale naked and that's that.

Many, (too many) people set their goals to the scale and fail. It is often because they set an unrealistic goal because they often don't understand the difference of muscle gain/fat loss of their bodies, or what healthy levels of each are. Many people do not realize that they will have to lose some muscle to reach their weight goals as well... this is never smart.

So besides being difficult to track well it is often the cause of motivation failure because the needle doesn't fluctuate enough for visual affirmation of work done.

This is why pictures and tape measures are so important for helping you see where you are, picture where you want to be and be able to track your results.

I like how you weigh yourself

I do it at the bar with a drink in hand and usually someone else is putting their foot on the scale as well.

cheers

I would be tempted to weigh myself after breathing in very hard. See if I could increase weight simply with a large amount of fresh Oxygen, then just breathe out and remeasure.

Interestingly, I once weighed myself with clothes on, then without.

weight dropped by 3lbs when I was naked, but then just for fun I weighed clothes, footwear as well and the weight was about 1.5lbs, so somehow after taking off clothes, 50% of the 3 lbs of lost weight, simply ceased to exist .

Gives perhaps a glimmer of hope to overweight people, that one day, humankind will find a way to harness, that mysterious weight loss twighlight zone effect.

Sadly it will probably be in a little Capsule, packed full of added Caffeine

And while we are on the subject, remember that "broken cookies have no calories".

The best one I've heard is, if you drop a piece of meat on the floor, it won't get contaminated if you pick it up within 5 seconds.

You can't catch STDs from pretty women.

That is one of the best descriptions ever. I always get frustrated with the stupid scale, even though I know that BMI and weight don't really mean anything. I agree with the above. Keep pictures, and the dates you took them, and you will see results. Promise.

Good luck.

I subscribe to the rule that women as a rule are all pretty! (Packard your rule works well with mine! )

I actually worked with a guy and our rule started out in the truck as a 5 second rule if we dropped food. As we cleaned the truck and the more hours we spent in it the time frame became longer. Needless to say we are both still alive and kicking.

"I ate dirt as a child and survived!" will be next T-Shirt !!

maybe have a baby animal from the muppets on the back of the shirt making mudpies!

And another would be "Break'n cookies lets the calories out." with cookie monster on the back breaking a cookie!

Although the best would be "Let's Excercise" with miss piggy attacking kermit on the back of it. LOL

Cheers all..... and ilurvebroccoli I'm glad you liked the comparisons and the explanation.
