Carb Question

Post by Evan »

They say that your muscles can store on average approximately 325 grams of glycogen and the liver has the ability to store approximately 110 grams of glycogen.

Does that then mean that you have to consume over 300 grams of carbs to start gaining fat, if you were to start from a fasted state (say overnight fasting?) whilst remaining inactive?

I am just a bit confused with the amounts of carbs you can eat and at what time to help gain lean muscle mass without adding fat. And I only ever eat low GI carbs....

The liver and muscles store glycogen which provides energy as well as the blood (blood glucose). Fat storage happens when more calories are consumed than utilized whether the calories come from carbs, protein, or fat. Dietary fat is more easily stores as body fat than carbs or protein. It is a good idea to eat a snack containing carbs and protein prior to exercise to prevent the body from using protein (muscle) as an energy source. Muscle mass comes from eating adequate calories and an effective strenght training program.
Low GI carbs (those that have the least effect on blood sugar) usually contain a lot of fiber or water and are good to eat prior to exercise to sustain energy. High GI carbs are good for after exercise when a certain enzyme is at its highest and the carbs are quickly absorbed.

yeah i think it's probably closer to 400g for ther entire body but depends on your size as well and muscle develepment...i think you only need 60 (but might be closer to 100g) of carbs for daily bodily functions...basically the more active you are such as daily training like an athlete you would need close to 325 - 400g/day and if not doing anythuing, have as close to 100g as you can then trial and error in between...in train 5 days a week about 45mins a go and have about 230 - 270g carbs a day at 73kgs
