Breast Implants and Chest Exercise

Post by radioflyer1017 »

Alright, I'm looking for some advice...

I've recently started training a woman with breast implants (under the muscle) and she wants to do a figure competition. Believe me, she's made for it! (5'7", 119lbs, 16.9% body fat) All we have to do is build some muscle and she'll be there.

Question is, her surgery was years ago but just to be safe we contacted the doctor about chest exercises. He said "no chest presses". None! Since chest flyes will develop the muscle as well I'd assume he'll frown on those! So...what the heck? Almost all figure competitors have implants, you're not going to tell me they don't train their chest!

Any thoughts or advice? Anyone else ever deal with this?

Based on nothing other than the fact that many women bodybuilders have implants this advice has been routinely ignored.

I understand that there is a risk if the bench press bar is allowed to bounce off the chest...

And when excessively lean the implants will telegraph right through the skin and be abundantly obvious in a bikini.

A thin layer of fat makes the implants more convincing.

understanding is that there are implants that are under the skin, and others that are under the muscle. I don't know the advantages/disadvantages.

I would guess from the lady BB's I've seen, they have them on the outside of the muscle. I don't recall seeing ripped pec muscles in the chest area unless it was shredded around the implant. (Jamie Eason, Melissa Detwiller etc.)....interesting.

Gabrielle Anwar, the actress, is excessively lean and in images where she is in a bikini the outline of the implant is obvious.

OK, sub-muscular typically have a more natural look and feel than do sub-glandular...but all of this is a bit off point, although a pretty entertaining debate!

What I'm wondering is if anyone else has dealt with this and what you've done. Is there really any major concern about the implant shifting laterally as we develop the pec?

Go to "Women's Area" Forum there is a thread about this titled something like Breast Implants and Exercise/Concerns.

Personally I would tend to go with doctor's advice. Maybe get a second opinion if she thinks the doc is being unreasonably cautious.

As you can see from pics I have no personal experience in this area

I Googled "Breast Implants & body building" and got a number of hits.

This read to be reasonably informative: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/implants.htm

You might Google also for additional articles.
