I buy old fashioned rolled oats as well. It is understanding that these are better than the quick cook oats as the quick cook have undergone a bit more processing to make them cook faster.

Oats are an excellent source of carb!

Other ways to cook them, you could cook them up with eggwhites into an oatmeal pancake. I believe Katie put a recipe in the diet and nutrition section last week. You could also blend them up into a powder and use that in smoothies and other recipes. I sometimes bake oats with sweetpotatoes and make oatmeal sweet potato bars.

Hope this helps.

The main difference between the two is the amount of processing. Steel cut oats become rolled oats that become quick oats. Steel cut take longer to cook but have more texture and don't have that mushy taste in your mouth. Steel cut oats are more calorie-dense, but you have to remember they are also more nutrient-dense on the whole. In addition, the more processed your oats are, the higher the GI rating is as well. In other words, steel cut oats are more of a slow-burning carb than quick oats.

Steel cut are also more expensive, so I usually opt for quick oats as I am pressed for time in the morning and need something super quick for energy. Steel cut have more of a "nutty flavor" and obviously more texture due to the reduction in processing.

I add some source of protein to that breakfast: eggs, egg whites or a scoop of protein powder into oats after they are cooked. Eating clean, well balanced meals under caloric maintenance will produce fat loss along with training and cardio.

No reason why not, unless you had something like Gastroparesis, or some kind of food intolerance, that Oats might trigger or worsen.

Where does "oat bran" fit?

I saw some "Oat Bran Hot Cereal" and thought I would try it. But I'm not sure where it fits in the steel cut vs. rolled vs. quick. Is it made from a different part of the kernel, and what are the nutritional values if anyone knows?

Thanks!

yes..that would be fine...may be a bit thick to drink though, unless you pulse in in the blender to break up the oats a bit ahead of time. Done this but again pretty thick I just add 1 scoop to the dry oats, mix with water and heat in microwave chow down!
