HITT - useful for 5km training?

Post by geoalehay »

Can anyone tell me if HIIT is a useful to reduce 5km running time, or should I use other methods such as general interval training (500m - 1km sprint intervals) and/or hill training?

HIIT tends to mix explosive with moderate pace Cardio.

For 5k running, this may be a hinderance, as you're training for a discipline, that is more Slow Twitch Muscle Fibre beneficial, rather than say 200M or 100M, which is more Fast Twitch beneficial, so you could be getting a reasonable balance of Slow and Fast Twitch adaption, but it might not be more optimal for a 5k discipline, nor if you chose to step it up further, to something like 10k in the future.

I'd suggest Interval would be more beneficial, as the heart rate would still fluctuate, not giving the body as much chance to adapt to it, hopefully negating any possible tapering of progress, that might be had from steady state.
