How long to spend on each muscle group?

Post by Dolph »

Just as the title says. I'm currently training about 5 or 6 times a week spending about an hour and a half per session.
Any of you bigger guys know how long I should be spending on each muscle group? I'm looking to gain more size but I dont want to sacrifice definition.

Oh and incidently I always get 48 hours rest or more for each group before training it again and I'm taking all the protein and Aminos etc.

Any advice appreciated.

Your training too long for starters. It's better to go for 100% for 30mins then to average 70% over 90mins. The bigger the muscle is the more sets it will need. Per session I'd go with something like:
Quads 8 - 10 sets
Hams 6 - 8 although depends on overlap from quad exercises and vice versa
Calves 4 - 6
Lats 6 - 8
Chest 6 - 8
Shoulders 6 - 8 spread out over 3 heads
Tris 4 - 6
Bi's 2 - 4
Abs 4 - 6 spread out over upper, lower, core, lower back

Aim for 45min sessions. Full body sessions are better than bodypart sessions. The volume you are using in conjunction with intensity will also be a factor. If your going for vol then no sets should be taken to falure except last set of each muscle group. If going for int than most sets to failure. Post what your currently doing and we can have a look at it. It's also hard to gain muscle while trying to keep definition as you need excess calories for growth. If yuo are trying to keep definition you will need to be just on maintenence or in a calorific deficit so it won't work. You'll need to bulk up then lose fat with seperate programs most likley

Incredible endurance to train that long! Focus on the essentials, squats, presses, rows, etc. 60-70 minutes should be sufficient to train multiple body parts.

When you say 6-8 sets for a muscle group how many different exercises is that for? I usually do 3 per group. Should I be doing less or more depending on the muscle group?

Cheers

6 - 8 total sets per muscle split over as many exercises as you like with any sets and reps you like although i wouldn't use more than 2 levels of intensity or you're probably trying to acheive too much at once
