Visualization and Affirmations for achieving your life goals

Post by beachdog »

Everyone would probably be familiar with positive affirmations, that is, repeating to yourself something that you want to happen, even as simple as saying "I'm late for work - please give me green traffic lights all the way."
Positive thoughts, feelings and affirmations can be programmed into the part of the brain/mind that runs on "auto-pilot" often referred to as the "subconscious" although this term is not really scientific.

Programming the subconscious though, is best done at home in a quiet environment without any outside interruptions. Allow 10 to 15 mins for a session (longer if you have a long list). Sit down in a comfy armchair, close your eyes and concentrate on letting your whole body relax.
Do a countdown in groups of three starting from 21, each time telling yourself that you are entering a deeper state of relaxation. You dont need to count out aloud, just think it to yourself.

For example: 21,20,19, "I can feel whole body starting to relax now"...18,17,16, "Deeper and deeper into total relaxed state.
Continue this way down to 1. At that point, visualize a peaceful scene from nature. This could be imagining yourself sitting on a grassy bank of a rippling stream, dangling your feet in the water without a care in the world..the only sounds you hear are the rippling of the water passing over pebbles, the breeze in the willow trees... Now, look up at the clear blue sky - this is your area for display, your screen. As an example .. you see your body as it is now.. overweight and flabby..Now cross out that image with a big black X (all imaginary) Never project that image on your subconscious screen again.
Replace it immediately with the person that you aspire to be, the new you and this is the image you will always visualize each time you meditate in your scene from nature.
Do not process too many images in the one session - usually two is enough. At this point you can say silently to yourself positive sayings (affirmations) that you want to embed in your psyche. These can be repeated at anytime later when you are going about your daily chores.
Now, to return from this meditative state, count upwards in groups of three from 1 this time finishing at 21 with the words "I am totally awake now and refreshed" Open your eyes, but wait a few minutes before standing.

AFFIRMATIONS that are relevant to people like us. Choose or modify them to suit your situation or compose your own. Note they must always be in the positive , present tense, that is do not use words like not/can't/won't etc and do speak about it as if it is happening to you right now, even though the changes are yet to take place.

Samples:
"I am supremely fit and healthy. I feel strong and energized. Every physiological system within body functions perfectly and mind and body work together in complete harmony. I enjoy deep and restful sleep at all times and body recovers from exertion quickly and completely. I relax easily in all areas."

"I have outstanding speed and alertness in reflexes and all senses are keen. I am supremely co-ordinated and have excellent balance and timing. Any form of exercise comes easily to me and I am successful at all that I attempt.
I am developing all of the qualities of an elite athlete. Unshakeable self-confidence, unbending motivation, one-pointed concentration, superior physical fitness and mental toughness."

"I always make the right decisions at the right time. Negative criticism from others and the stress of life bounces off me. Only positive thoughts control mental and physical processes. speed, strength, endurance and muscular physique increases every day and I shall live in perfect health forever."

Agree totally that "positive" thinking is the only way, the form in which you practice it may differ from person to person. I truly feel if you wake up thinking, oh god, what a terrible day I have in front of me - you will experience a terrible day. On the other hand if you wake thinking, I'm going to progress today at whatever - working out, eating right etc., you will accomplish what you set out to do.

Your thoughts become your reality!

Thanks for a great post!

Thank you so much for an excellent post! What a positive and healthy outlook to have on oneself!

I love your positive energy! And it has obviously had a powerful impact on your life.

I love the three samples you give of affirmation. And i will be reading over those daily and putting that into use in life.

I struggle with having a positive self image so this is really helping me to learn how to see myself for the strong, healthy, and fit person that I am.

You are such an inspiration and role model for people of all ages! I wish you much success in all you desire to achieve. :)

Thanks for the accolades Fitoverforty, glad I could be of help. I will be using the above techniques this weekend as I defend Australian indoor rowing titles. It's a crazy sport where one-pointed concentration and the ability to shut out all distractions are paramount. I'll let you know how I went (Unless I bomb out, in which case there will be a deafening silence.) :D
