Sore muscles, small problem

Post by agthompson »

I have just started doing weight training. I did first full body workout Saturday. I have Sundays off, and today being Monday, I do HIIT cardio today.

The muscles above knee's are really sore (from squats), and I foresee it effecting cardio today. Before the workout Saturday I did about 6 minutes worth of stretching, but I don't believe it was enough at this point (as the muscles in the upper back of arms hurt as well.)

I'm sure this is very common and I should probably just fight through it, but being a beginner to all of this, I wanted to make absolutely sure I'm not going to put too much strain on myself.

Thanks a ton for the help.

If your sore that means you did good! You’re the kind of sore that only beginners get its good enjoy it.

It goes away with time as your body gets use to the exercise so work through it. If it’s only your first day you’re going to hurt even worse tomorrow. It’s a good idea to use lighter weights while your body adapts. You wont hurt so much

Thanks a ton for the quick reply. Was hoping to get a response before tonight. The lighter weight tip really helps alot, as I would have attempted to use the same weight tomorrow.

Are you definitely doing your squats using correct form?

Before we put this down to beginners ache we should definitely rule this out.

Well, the small gym I use doesn't have a set of barbells, so I have to use dumbbells which make it a bit awkward. I very well could be doing them wrong.

It wouldnt hurt to get a trainer to just check your form. Even the worst trainers must know how to perform a good squat!! :?

Also check out youtube.com - they have great videos on most exercises.

I'm still sore, and I've been working out for 6 months - always increasing the resistance as I go - should I NOT be experiencing soreness? I agree with Len - that I must be doing something right! :) Isn't this where No Pain, No Gain comes to play?

Or drop a DB on your foot. That will hurt like hell and should do you even more good.

Unfamiliar exercises will cause muscle soreness for 1 or 2 training sessions. If you are sore after that period of time, then you should see if you are executing correctly.

Working out light after getting sore will accellerate the healing process by drawing in blood to the affected area and flushing out the lactic acid.

I think this is all normal.

Oh, and don't drop a DB on your foot. "No pain, no gain" is largely B.S.

I feel your pain!!! I worked out yesterday and added some more weight this time. I even stretched before and after for around 10 mins. I tried to get out of bed this morning and fell. What sucks even more is that i have a job that requires lifting. Just gotta fight through it! It's all in the process i guess!

I injured knee a while back and I am just now starting to run again and I now remember what it was like the first couple times I worked out. It just takes a few days for your body to adjust to the fact that it is working harder than usual.

Stick it out and if you want a quick try taking an Epsom Salt bath. I took one last night and it did help relieve muscle soreness. Plus this morning I was not as sore as I would have been had I not soaked. Just put 2 cups of Epsom salt in a warm bath and soak for 15-30 minutes.

Good luck everyone with your workouts!
