Protein is good for recovery. So taking it after workouts increases the chances of some of the Aminos, that facilitiate recovery and growth working in an optimal way.

If you take Protein 4-5 hours afterwards, the result will be similar but not as significant, and then you'll be preventing Catabolism mainly, but any likely growth and recovery of muscles, will almost certainly be cut down, and won't be as effective.

So taking a good Protein source after workouts, upto 60 minutes afterwards benefits you a lot, and then you can take more 2-3 hours later, to carry on the Anti-Catabolic and repair / growth work, your Post-workout nutrition facilitates.

Well fi you do that, and I unashamedly admit I do it as well, the try to get ones with similar Protein to Carb ratio, and you're looking for at least 20-25 grams of both.

Protein drinks like Myoplex would be a bit better, but if you need convenience, then some Protein Bars aren't as bad as others.

If you check around, you should be able to find some, that have some half way decent Protein, Carb and other ingredient levels.

I agree with Swanso. Protein bars are often made with low quality protein and some even have high fructose corn syrup and trans fats. Not real good choices.

Protein has a lot of functions in the body and should be taken in throughout the day. Same as with carbs and fats. Pre workout, post workout, lunch, breakfast, dinner, whenever. It's best to get most of your protein from real food choices. A high quality protein powder is ok to supplement with as well though.

i think whey protein should be a staple to anyone who intends to gain muscle or lose fat. so yes, u should probably get that. as for calories, u need to eat a little more calories than your body burns off to build muscle, but i personally dont worry about it too much, unless u have an eating problem or something then u may want to look into it

protein contains amino acids which are the building blocks for muscle recovery and growth but overall calories are required too...if you were to only eat protein and nothiong else, you'd have nothing to fuel your workouts with (carbs) or nothing to fuel you during the day (fats) which would result in burning muscle while you're trying to build it
