shoes are going to be mainly for the police academy. For six months I'll be running 3 miles 3 times a week. So I want feet in the healthiest shape possible. Which means paying much for a great pair of shoes.

I'll go in there and talk to the guy/girl.
The price of a shoe does not necessarily equate with what is best for you. When you finally find a shoe that you absolutely love, they will replace it with an "improved" version that you will hate. This is done to comply with state and federal laws (or some other ridiculous reason).

I understand what you're saying. I'm not going to walk in and go "give me the most ridiculously priced shoe." I'm going to make sure I like them and they feel comfortable.

Of course I won't know the "long run" aspects of it (no pun intended). But that's something I'll have to figure out trial and error.

As far as running goes, 3 miles is not that far. It will take a bit of time to get in shape for this, but 3 miles three times a week should not unduly stress your body in any way unless you are very overweight or have some medical condition.

I would imagine almost any good quality running shoe will suffice for this distance and this weekly total.

Unless he gets one that's made for people who overpronate.
Yeah, well I'd walk into a dedicated running shoe store and tell them I'm a beginner, and I'm planning on running 9 miles a week and I have $75.00 budgeted (or whatever) and see what they recommend.

I went through a bunch of shoes before I found a good one. Luckily I'm very hard on shoes and they wear out fast so I got this squared away in less than a year.

I don't run anymore so I go for an icon of fashion, the Stan Smith by Adidas. A good comfortable shoe for daily wear. But not for running. It looks good too.

Most of them tell me they know what they're talking about. But I really think they have no clue. I'm going to a better place soon and seeing what they have to say. I'm probably going to go with the New Balance place or going with the "Under Armour Neutral" shoes.

Do you think the Under Armour Neutral shoes will help?

Unless you have a serious foot defect I doubt that 3 miles will cause damage. I think your pain has to do with a lack of conditioning. It sounds like a muscle cramp to me.

Did it "walk off"? Did the pain ease up after walking a bit? Then it would be a cramp.

If it is a cramp then hydrating and conditioning are the answers. Start with shorter runs and build up from there.

I've found that most of the folks at New Balance around here know what they're doing...I've only found one that didn't. But NB shoes are really easy to spot because they color-code the heels. If there's extra support, you can see it for yourself. You don't want anything that has a colored bar toward the inside of the shoe.

And check out their website too.

See, this one says over-pronator:
http://www.newbalance.com/running/training/MR1224/
So that's a no...

This one's neutral, but it looks a little heavy...you'd have to try it on.

Anyway, they should be able to help you out. Unfortunately for folks like us, the majority of their shoes are made for over-pronators. You just have to go and ask. :)

Good luck!

And also, check this out, and you might want to do some more research online:

You are so helpful. I really couldn't ask for more!! I'm definitely going to look back at some new balance shoes again. If I can't find any I like, I'm going to look for a "Neutral" shoe.

It didn't start hurting until after I ran. Maybe about 1-3 hours after? I can't really recall. But by the end of the day it was really discomforting. When I walked I could feel discomfort (from last night it was still there [Thursday is when i did it]).

I figured a new shoe can't hurt. If I can't find anything to help me out, I'll probably go with a Neutral shoe and see what happens with that.

But with the stellar information amatlack gave me, I should be on way! Tomorrow I'm going to a bigger shoe store (with many variations and brands). They aren't open on Sundays. So tomorrow should be the day!

If it was some kind of cramping, then more water and / or perhaps a minor increase in Sodium intake, might correct the problem

It MIGHT have been the water. But it's definitely not the sodium intake. I am a very big stickler about how much sodium I ingest in a day.

I decided on some Asics shoes. They felt pretty comfortable and they are flexible and cushioned. I guess only time will tell eh? I'll keep you guys informed. Going running tomorrow.

Even though feet hurt now, rather strange. Anyone know any way to relieve feet pain? Like some kind of bath? Salt Bath?

The "run/walk" training program is currently highly recommended. It allows quicker gains with fewer injuries.

There are several articles on this on the internet. Google: "Run walk programs".

Here is one such program (12 week): http://www.lifecommstore.com/bonus/walkrunprogram.pdf

Appreciate it. But I don't have that much time.. plus I'm not in --too-- bad shape. I just need to train feet to work with it.

Speaking of feet, I ran today in shoes. I'll get more into details in Workout Journal; however, things went well.

I ran approximately 1.25mi straight (map quest states it was 1.38mi, but heck with that. round down). I ran a decently slow pace, more like a fast jog, or a jog in general. Then I walked back (same distance).

On way back I started to feel a burn in right arch. Probably just normal, since it's not used to being used so much. However there's no real problem with it. Of course, I just finished 10 minutes ago. I'll keep you posted.

I wear New Balance for weight training but decided on ASICS for running. However the ones that were most comfortable and offered the most support were rather pricey $139.99. I was starting to have some shin issues and felt I needed the gel support they offer.

Your comments were very interesting Allison - when I purchased ASICS the sales person was talking about the issues you raised and of course I had no idea what he was talking about. Looks like you would've stayed at that store! :):)
