Treadmill or Elliptical Trainer

Post by BayouBabe »

I injured left knee a few years ago and have significant pain after doing a lot of walking. I have found the elliptical machine to be a lot easier on knee; however, I have recently read that using an elliptical machine is not recommended because it burns sugar not fat. I am wondering if this is true or not. I do not want to do an exercise that will not give me the results I am looking for. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have never heard of that.. I'm not sure how an exercise machine can burn sugar and leave the rest alone?

To understanding the elliptical machine is just a way to exercise (like a treadmill) with different variations. Example: Pyramid Scheme, Intervals, Hills, etc..

The point of an elliptical and treadmill (heck even running) is to burn calories and help your heart get into shape. At least that's what I'm under the impression of.

Several of friends are doing Micheal Thurmond's six week body makeover. I looked at the program with them at the gym and was very surprised when I read it. It listed Stair Climbing, Elliptical machines, aerobic dancing, aerobic step classes, kick boxing, stair step machines (these are different than stair climbers), circuit training (with weights or machines), climbing machines (or climbing walls), rowing machines, martial arts, boxing, and power cycling (spinning) classes and said, "The majority of these activities involve the use of muscle fibers when lifting the body or performing an explosive movement. This type of muscle fiber uses glycogen (a form of sugar contained in the muscles and bloodstream) for their source of fuel. When your body burns sugar, it is NOT burning fat! For fast, efficient fat-burning, stick with long, slow, rhythmic workouts...like paced walking and slow jogging." Is this true or will using an elliptical machine for 45-60 minutes 4-5/week keeping heart rate at 65% satisfy cardio needs?

You could do interval stuff to get good Fat burning.

Glycogen is stored in the Muscles and Liver 'tis true, and will get used during exercise, but Fat burning should also happen, most of the time.

Using an elliptical for 45-60 minutes 5-6 times a day isn't good for Fat burning.

You'd be better doing that for 30 minteus 2-3 times a week, with something like an interval setting, and then incorporate some weight resitance exercise, as building small amounts of muscle, would be beneficial for Fat burning.

Thanks for replies they are greatly appreciated. I should have said to begin with I do weight training 5 days a week. I have been following the Intermediate routines for 5 days a week that are provided on here. I would like to do whatever cardio is most beneficial to me.
Thanks again for the replies!

As for the weights then, don't do it 5 days straight, do it 3 on, 1 off, 2 on 1 off, so you're not doing 2 straight days of nothing in the weeks.

As for the Cardio, I would allow the muscles you're to get good recovery, so when you do Cardio on Lower Body days, do Bike, to take away some additional wear and tear on the Lower body during a session.

After upper body I would still go for Bike, but could do Treadmill or stepper, but don't do Rowing machine, as you'll be using a lot of upper body muscles again.

Straight to the point as always Swanso. :D

I dont think it matters what cardio you do really. For fat burning i find HIIT best which is intervals.

So whatever machine you choose (and if you mix it up each workout you wont get bored) you work all out for 1 minute and then lower the pace until you recover for 1 min (you can do 30 seconds, 45 seconds etc. I do 1 min tho).

I do full body workouts 3-4 days a week and finish off with 20 mins of HIIT. if you have more time then me you could do your HIIT on different days to resistance training. Personally though, I think 3-4 times a week is enough. :)
