splits

Post by Laurie1 »

do you think 4-5 day splits are good because shouldnt you give the muscles you worked the day before rest even doe you aint working the same muscles your still not resting.

I think thats too much. Although it depends how much you do for every muscle.
I for example do a 3 day split and work out every second day, so that i work on one muscle only once a week. But I'm doing many sets and lift heavy. For me it works pretty good at the moment. I think the single muscles need tht one week rest in this case, because sometimes I still feel soreness in one muscle 3 oder 4 days after the workout...

Splits are fine, but you need to remember some golden rules.

1. Don't do too much volume. You can't realistically do 15 set Chest workouts for example, so don't bother.

2. Don't workout for excessive periods.

3. Don't waste time of pissy things like Wrist Curls or use bad technique.

If you use those as a marker for what you do, you can then get a good workout based on splits.

Then it's just a few basic staples like low rep, heavy weight, other things like Deads, Squats, Cleans, Chins, etc etc.

If you're not really acclimatised to splits too well, get an instructor on the case, and don't go over 5 days a week.

So perhaps do this sort of thing.

Legs

Chest

Back

Day off

Shoulders

Bi's / Tri's

Day off.

not in the traditional sense no

if you want a plant to get bigger you water it a little bit everyday, not once a week with a lot of water, much of what will be wasted

see where i'm headed...

There are two aspects of recovery and they play into the split routine.

The first aspect is the specific muscle recovery. The split addresses this nicely. It allows you to work each muscle harder because there is a longer time between hitting the same muscles again.

The second aspect is often exacerbated by the split. Your body as a totality needs to recover. When you do splits you run the risk of working your body so hard that your core energy is depleted. When this happens you face the probability that you will need to take an extended respite to allow your body to catch up with the work load.

I favor split routines. It allows you to get very strong and to build good size. But you have to listen carefully to your body. If you start to feel sluggish or cranky or you just don't feel like going into the gym, then you need to schedule a week of rest to catch up. Don't try to will yourself into the gym. Long term you will fail and you will end up avoiding the gym for extended periods of time.

Depends on how you do the split. I think a four day split (M/T; Th/Fr) would be good if you used it to hit a muscle group twice a week (once every five days).

But I don't think you should split to the point of imitating pro bodybuilding routines--that's overkill.
