I have about 8 days until I do first 12k. Although I have been running since 2006 I am just recently increasing mileage from 4 miles to 8 and I am scared to death of race day.
What happens if I get out there and I can't do it? Or I am the last person to finish? I am scared I don't know the course since it's a few hours away. Just wondering what y'all would say to help anxiety.

First of all, congratulations on your endeavor! I think that is totally awesome and I know you can do this. Here's the most important thing. Believe in yourself...every step of the way, you can do this. Tell yourself, even when it seems like you want to quit...don't you do it. You have worked hard, trained hard and your ready. We believe in you, but the power has to come from you. So what if your the last to finish? Although I doubt that will happen. You are accomplishing more than you think and believe me the feeling of elation you get when you cross that finish line will be one that will be with you for a very long time. Just relax and have fun. Your gonna do great

The main thing is not to worry or doubt. You need to go there, and feel like you can win the whole thing.
Even if you end up coming in the middle of the field, better that, than believing you aren't capable of much, and coming 20 minutes slower than that.
You might get a great finish, perhaps even win, who knows, but if you self defeat, you WON'T achieve your best, or potentially close to it either.
You've been running for 3 years there or there abouts, so you're not going into this lightly, and 12k isn't a massive distance, so you should be well able to do this.
So you keep your chin up, DON'T let anything put you off your mindset, and think like a winner okay, because, if you believe you have what it takes to do really, really well, you will do a lot better than bricking yourself, and worrying, and talking yourself down.
You've had the ability to start running and stick to it, and that takes a lot of personal commitment, Heart and guts, because 3 years is not a walk in the park, to be pretty much dedicated on what almost certainly, I would surmise is day to day basis.
You have that Heart, you have that ability, so don't be afraid of yourself. Don't emotinally hurt, and damage what all that heard work has culminated in.
You may find you have the ability to take it further, and be a really, really good, tactical and powerful running talent, but not if you feel like that first time was mediocre, because you kicked yourself in the guts, before you'd even begun.
In any sport where it's you on your own, no team, no partners, it's all about YOU, not anyone else. You alnoe control your destiny, you alone can screw up ot succeed, nobody can help you succeed, or resuce a possible screw up.
However you can also view it as you not having to possibly carry others, or make up for others mistakes. You DO have the emotional and mental ability to make that physical ability what it needs to be. Get the three harmonised, you will be so much more of a runner than you think you are.
You have the strenght here to do this, you've ben doing it for 3 years, so don't suddenly self defeat yeah. Yes it's fine to question, fine to wonder if you're doing a right or wrong thing, but DON'T let it become an exercise in self flagellation.
You've worked hard for 3 years to get here, don't throw 3 years away with a dissapointing run okay
.
So you get out there on the day, you view that course as no more challenging or difficult than a usual run, and just keep your chin up and be VERY, VERY PROUD of how far you've gone to get there.
You've run a lot mroe than 12k in 3 years, so what's another 12k in comparison. A drop in the ocean.
You're more amazing than you might think.
GOOD LUCK.
