Morning Cardio

Post by JJjj »

I'm trying to lose the fat ive aquired over the past 6 months due to unhealthy eating and not exersizing.. I naturally have quite a bit of muscle mass I just need to lose the fat on top. If I do cardio first thing in the morning without eating (which is 30 minutes on a hill interval workout) will that burn the fat, or will it lose muscle?
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Exercising on empty will cause you to burn more protein (muscle) for energy than desired because glycogen (carbohydrate) stores are somewhat depleted after an overnight fast. A small amount of protein is used anyway when doing cardio. I suggest that you eat a snack containing carbohydrate and a small amount of protein in the morning before you workout which will promote more fat and glycogen use and spare protein loss.

I suggest eating before cardio as well. You will perform better. Also, even if you are not prone to low blood sugar episodes running on an empty tank could cause them.

Research shows that a tiny bit more fat is burned when people do cardio before breakfast than after. However, research also shows that people who do cardio before breakfast are significantly hungrier throughout the day, and have a tendency to eat more.
