Hip pain with deads and squats

Post by Patrick »

Hey guys i have been away from this forum for quite some time but i have a question to ask here before i go see doctor. For awile now hip has given me real probelms mainly with squats and deadlifts. Deads were so abd i had to quit doing them and squats were not long after i stayed away for 3 months and just mianly played hockey (no hip pain what so ever) so then i took an additional month and did nothing but rest. Now im back int the gym and still same problem first time i did deadlifts before i even had the bar loaded i only had about 150 on there and i stretched and warmed up before hand so this leads me to believe it is a tear or somehting serious like your guys opinions.

If it was torn, you'd expect to see some kind of Bruising, or severe reddening I would expect.

First thought is technique. If your range of motion slightly favours one Leg I.E. you push off slightly out of synch, and one Leg moves just before the other, you'll be going through the motions, with a very slight lean, potentially over emphasising the loadbearing of the weight, onto one side more than the other.

Another possibility is you're using poor foot placement, which means you might be having one foot slightly behind the other, which could mean one Leg and Hip wouldn't be configured the same as the other Leg and Hip from the getgo, possibly causing movement imbalance.

Another possiblity is hand placement. If you're not holding the Bar dead centre, you could have hands Shoulder width apart, but more bar sticking out at one side, causing lopsided weight distribution.

Or you could be stacking the Bar wrongly, I.E. 20KG disc one side, 2 x 10 the other. Same weight both sides, different distribution.

If it's not any of those things, you might be having poor back placement, I.E. Back isn't straight it's hunched, or you're too far forwards with the Torso, or you move the back out of alignment mid rep.

You need to ideally get a PT or instructor to watch you doing Squats and Deads for at least 2 sets on each, to assess for any of the aforementioned issues and possibly others..

If you don't have technique issues, it may be something to do with weak Back and / or Core. In which case you may need to spend more time strengthening then up, to handle what you loadbear, so you don't cause additional weightbearing on the Hip and Glute muscles.

A PT or Gym instructor should be able to rule out things with range of motion, posture, weight handling, and muscle imbalance in the lower Torso, and if they turn out negative, then you would have to see a Doctor or specialist, incase it's something to do with a slight Bone issue or something like that.

get yourself a foam roller and search youtube fior "cressey performance foam rolling" and do exactly what tony on the vid does

hockey has very limited range of motion at the hip yet overloaded like a bitch...you need a lot of lateral thigh work and hip activation/strengthening work to do

HIP/BACK PAIN

Post by fitmotif »

back pain is 8 months long. It is so disturbingly painful that after 3 injections, PT, and several X-rays, I just did an MRI. I haven't received the results yet. The thought is I either have a bulging disc or,
QL tendon is too tight.

I went to a massage school and had the instructor work on QL tendon and throstic/glute deep tissue. After two sessions, I was able to run 1.5 miles today. We will see how tomorrow will feel, but it's a start.

Good luck.
