Hoodia and other supplement questions...

Post by jamie0805 »

I'm really just curious about this- I saw a couple posts on fat burners but haven't seen anything on this (I'm sorry if I missed something- the search engine didn't seem to work well). I actually can't remember what it's supposed to do exactly. I used something with Hoodia because sisterinlaw recommended it and it made me really grouchy. Right now I'm using slimquick because it's what it took to get me back on the workout/eat healthy wagon (I think it's mostly psychological but since I'm 5 months post partum and have failed multiple attempts to get back in pre-baby shape I'm just happy I've stuck with it for more than 1 work out lol). Anyway, I have some slimquick with hoodia that I bought right after baby came but never took. I'm wondering if anyone else has taken it before? Is it more like green tea than a fat burner or what?

Also, I'm curious about daily vitamins...I've started taking a one a day women's supplement (can't remember the brand but it's supposedly made from whole foods). I'm wondering if I should just focus on taking individual vitamins and not taking the multi? I probably would take a vit E, possibly fish oil (though they give me indegestion for some reason), and calcium at a minimum...probably calcium with vit d. I saw that there was a sticky that recommended not to take a whole multi but it didn't give much of an explaination. TIA =)

Dump the Hoodia and Slimquick. False promises and waste of your money. You can lose weight and gain muscle more efficiently through a clean diet and good exercise regime. A multi-vitamin is fine, I use generic brand which includes calcium in 1 pill for women. I take fish oil daily.

Totally agree with the last comment, the supplement industry is built on false promises, "If it sounds to good to be true it probably is" Nothing beats a clean diet and exercise.

If you want, check site. You don't have to, but I did a full review on Hoodia about a year ago.

I actually already eat pretty clean...I mean there are a few processed things in diet (eg blue tortilla chips but vs regular tortilla chips soooo much better and I just can't totally give up chips and salsa or I'd can the whole thing in a week lol) but generally speaking I try to eat only fruits, veggies, chicken, fish, and whole grains. I'm allergic to beef and of anumber of other things including dairy bc of migraines.

I actually went of slimquick and I actually think it was making me retain weight!! I think it could've been causing me to skip snacks and eat too few calories...I'm also staying away from multi right now because it was irritating something and making me have to go to the bathroom every five minutes...and though I drink a lot of water, water intake has not increased enough to warrant that! lol and today and yesterday I feel much better. Oh well hopefully healthy eating will get me enough vitamins alone =)

Yes. I do 30 minutes on elliptical 4 days a week (I have a 5 month old and for now that's what I can do at home) and go to the gym 3 days where I'm now doing weights, couch25k training (just started today), and 20 minutes on the elliptical there doing intervals (5 minute warm up, 3 minutes hard, 2 minutes rest etc).

Unfortunately, with all that, eliminating processed foods (mostly) from diet mainly focusing on not eating out and trying to eliminate most unhealthy/unnecessary fats (like butter...I use olive oil sparingly but use a lot of pam instead), I also can't eat red meats (allergic) and I'm just reintroducing dairy though I think I'm going to continue general ban of most cheeses (at least the fatty ones...I'm going to eat the low fat mozarella etc but stay clear of cheddar for the most part). Anyway, with all that- I'm still not losing weight and going crazy. I swear metabolism was destroyed by pregnancy- the first half of which I was deathly ill and the last half I was too swollen to move let alone exercise (I lost about 20 lbs of water weight after I gave birth lol).

Jamie,

Don't give up! As a mother of 2 and having a career outside the home, it's really hard to try to keep on track somedays. Please don't beat yourself up over this. Be patient and in time things will fall into place. We live in a world where we all want what we desire yesterday, it's human nature. I'm not at all trying to discourage you but it took me 5 years (and it should have never taken that long) to get me where I am today. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely! But there are some things I can never change and I just have to accept. Part of it is heredity and the other is a thyroid issue (neither of which I have any control over) I'll never be a size 2, and I'm never going to lose pooch on lower abdomen because it's just who I am. As women, we need to embrace things that, well... cannot be fixed unless we go under the knife. Fitness begins inside and once that confidence starts shining through, nothing else will matter.

You've eliminated processed foods, that is great! Eating clean, does not mean no flavor, you can add flavor with spices and rubs without sacrificing taste. It just takes your palate a little getting used to. One thing is very important, you have to incorporate weight training with cardio. You stated you have begun this process so stick with it.

I know your frustrated, but in time you will see results. By all means, it will not be easy but it will happen. Slow and steady wins the race. You just had a baby, so forgive your body a bit and enjoy every second of motherhood. Before you know it, they'll be asking for the keys to the car and you'll be running marathons to keep up with their social calendars!
I'm living and breathing proof! Good luck and keep me posted :D
