favorite variation on the explosive push-up is to push up hard and fast so that your hands leave the ground then cross your arms in front of you and touch opposite shoulders and still get your hands back in position to "catch" you before your chin hits the ground.
It is not as hard as it sounds, but be careful with it or you will split your chin.

Yes, "balance" should be the key word for any workout routine. An unbalanced routine that favors one body part over others makes your body less functional and and makes it look less harmonious.
