elbow injury

Sorry if this isn't the right location for this post but it seemed to fit. I have been doing some vigorous weight training since early May and have stayed completely healthy the entire time. Recently, I went back to work at a maintenance garage that I worked at over the summer which I left once college started back up again. They have had me moving things over and over and specifically was was pulling 20 foot long boards across body and lifting up at the same time. I'll try to explain this as best I can. The boards were being fed to me from left, and I was reaching across body and grabbing with right arm. I was then pulling the board over to right side and lifting up in the air at the same time to place them on shelving units. Other than just all around soreness, I felt no distinct pain at the end of the day. When I woke up the following morning, right elbow was throbbing. I have been off of it and have not gone to the gym or work in 3 days. The pain is still there. It hurts the most when I fully extend arm as far as it can go, and also when I am pushing off of the ground or something solid with that arm.

I know its probably pretty hard to diagnose with just text but does anyone have a clue how long I should stay off the elbow. I would like to return to work by Monday at the latest. Also, how long after the pain subsides should I begin lifting again? I have been putting a heating pad on it several times a day for about 30 mins but was recently told that that could maybe make it worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You might be as well to Ice it about 3-4 times a day for 15 minutes, and also consult a Doctor. You might have caused some kind of Myositis, (muscle inflammation), Myalgia, (Muscle Pain), Inflammation of a connective tissue, Bursitis, etc etc.

Just can't be specific.

If you did not hear any loud noises at the time of the injury I would give it a few more days before consulting a doctor. If it is a tendon or muscle injury it can take as long as 6 weeks to heal. If it is a tendon tear you probably would have heard it tear. If it does not start to feel better after a week I'd see a doctor.

If it does start to feel better, try to be patient and wait until it is healed or you may suffer a set back.

One of the key things to learn about training is that you are going to get injuries from time to time. When they do occur pick another body part that you will be able to train hard and for 6 weeks or so do extra heavy work on that body part. This will make going to the gym seem productive even though you are skipping a significant part of your conventional workout. If you don't feel productive you will end up skipping the workout entirely.

It is likely that you can do abdominal work and leg work. I'd concentrate on those. (Avoid squats as you need your arms to stabilize the barbell.)

Thanks guys, I had friend whos a PT look at it and he said its most likely bursitis(sp) so you were def on. Doesn't seem to be that bad though, so ive just been icing it. I tried to bench in basement and got one rep and just stopped cause I could feel it. Prolly will call into work as well so I have a long week of rest and relaxation ahead of me.

Dad used to get bursitis of the shoulder. When it got really bad they shot some anti-inflammatory (I believe it was cortisone) into the shoulder with a very, very long needle.

I don't know if that is the current preferred treatment method.
