Re: Bad knee
Clinically diagnosed arthritis or just cranky knees?Bigwayne wrote:Hi. I am 38 years old ,and I have a arthritic knee need some advise on what kind exercises will I be able to do or should do any advise would be appreciated.
I have arthritis and doctor's advice was, "Do as much as you can for as long as you can."
The pain from some forms of arthritis cannot be adequately controlled by pain killers or immunosuppressant drugs to allow you to do much.
What does your rheumatologist say?
orthopedic surgeon advised that I should not do any leg extension, squats that it was bad for knees .I have been doing those exercise and it actually seems to be helping with the pain . When i went to the doctor the knee was real swollen ,but since I've been doing the squats but no leg extension the swollen as gone down with just a little bit of pain behind the knee cap.I apperciate any advise that you all good give. thanks
Did the orthopedic surgeon say that there was no damage to the knees and that you are suffering from arthritis? If so, has he referred you to a rheumatologist?
A rheumatologist will be best able to suggest what is acceptable for your knees if it is arthritis.
As I have stated before, rheumatologist has told me to "do as much as possible for as long as possible" and that doing this will not damage the joints.
I would not offer that prescription to you because I have neither the medical expertise to do so, nor have I made the medical examination. This is advice that a medical professional should make in opinion.

arthritis affects hands, neck, and hips primarily.Bigwayne wrote:Thanks for the advise . With your arthritis are you able to do squats, leg extension and what supplements do you take for the joint pain.
The doctor has me on methotrexate, which is generally used in chemo therapy for cancer patients but it has the ability to reduce the effectiveness of the immune system, and the immune system is what is attacking the joints.
I am also on Enbrel, a biological that is injected and sharply reduces the effect of the immune system.
Both drugs are dangerous and are prescribed in only very severe cases. Methotrexate is fairly cheap, but Enbrel runs the insurance company about $30,000.00 per year so they fought me on that.
The main issue I face with exercising is that hands hurt in the morning. I take anti-inflammatories for the pain (naproxen or ibuprofen).
