I recently overcame an eating disorder and have worked hard at getting body back to a healthy weight. I have struggled with hormonal problems all life and now thyroid disease is taking its toll on mind and body. I am on thyroid meds. but still keep gaining weight. I work out 1 hr. a day doing cardio. I am 6 feet tall and naturally thin, but I dont want to keep gaining weight. I want to lose about 7 lbs. I am comfortable weighing 125-130 lbs, most of you would say that is too thin, but i have never weighed over 140 in life. I am 24 years old and I want some advice on how to lose these last few lbs. with this disease. any advice would be greatly appreciated
Why specifically the meds? I'd guess you might be on something like Synthroid. I don't know a lot about it, but I've heard the side effects may not be too hot.
It may be the way you diet and supplement that plays a part.
The Thyroid and the Parathyroid, can exert effects on Calcium and Phosphorus use. Also the bodies Idodine levels / use are affected by the Thyroid, as T3 and T4 hormones are Iodine containers.
So possible things like Dairy, Fish, Shellfish, Nuts, Grains etc etc, may need to be monitored.
Like Hyperthyroid, I suspect you might be needing to reduce things like Fat and Salt intake. I believe Hyperthyroid people are told to restricted to approximately 2g Salt, and 30g Fat daily. I'd imagine for Hypothyroid people it might be the same or similar.
Also Iodine foods might be partly an issue too. Some of the higher level foods I'm aware of are Fish, Shellfish and Bread.
Also you may need to be aware of Cruciferous Veggies, like Broccoli, as they may be minor Iodine players, but also Goitrogen containers, as Goitrogens can influence Thyroid functions too to some extent.
You need Iodine in your body, but obviously you don't want massive amounts.
The Meds could be influencing weight gain to some extent. Some meds do.
You might want to explore something like Iodine supplementing possibly. I've heard something called Lugols is quite good.
The thing for now, (I feel), would be whether or not you have alternatives to the meds, (Meds may be increasing weight), and if so, should you use the alternatives instead?
The other thing is 1hr a day Cardio is too much. Thyroid is partly responsible for Metabolic issues, along with the Hypothalamus, as the Hypothalamus controls TSH production in the Pituitary, and TSH regulates T3, T4 and Calcitonin in the Thyroid. As you could be affecting the Thyroid, doing that much Cardio exercise, I'd cut it back to 30 minutes 3x a week, and don't do anything else like Weights etc etc, until you've explored other ways, to manage yourself.
Meds may be a problem, Diet may be a problem, too much Cardio may also be a problem, expecially if calories in your diet, don't allow for the heavy exercise, so you need to make sure you seek further medical help, or consider using alternative options, if you feel the Meds may not be benefitting you like you need.

Amatlack, I am sorry you have suffered with Hashimotos for so long.
I would ask though, in your extremely considered opinion, do you think Synthroid is necessarily a good option. I've heard it can have many side effects.

I've read that Hashimotos can cause things like Cramps, Fatigue, and Stiffness in the Joints, as effects it can exert, If I'm right on that.
It obviously must make exercising a little difficult at times.
You're entirely right about the specialist help, and of course your clarity on the situation is respected and appreciated.

I have Hypo also and have been on Levoxyl (Same thing as Synthroid) for 7years. condition had been stable and on the same dose for 4 years (confirmed by yearly Blood tests, after being stable for 2 years) but then got way out of wack a few months ago, and I had tons of Fatigue, and Stiffness in the Joints. dosage was increased from 112mcg to 137mcg, and that's when I decided I needed to get back in the gym and make an effort to get into better shape.
I am struggling with the thyroid thing too. I had mine removed in1995 when I was 24, have done great until 1.5 years ago when the Endo wanted to drop Levo level from 2mg to 1.5. I gained 20 lbs. in 3 months it was bad and she did not care. June 1 st I got a personal trainer and work out 3 days a week doing cardio and strength training I feel alot better but I weigh the exact same as I did almost 5 months ago. Just saw an Internest yesterday and he is determined to help. For 2 months I have been eating 1200 cal a day and have been learning to run. I am up to 5 min run/1 min walk for 30 min. Great for me, I am endowed. I could almost cry that I haven't lost weight. No I do cry frequently, But I just keep swimming, just keep swimming. I am not giving up - I am going to try Armour.

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism this past summer through a simple blood test. I had no symptoms, and did not gain extra weight. I was put on Synthroid 50mg a day and have felt no different when I did not take it. Though I am not a big fan of pill popping, I made a personal choice that the benefit far outweighed the risk of not taking the drug.
But, over time, untreated hypothyroidism can cause a number of health problems, such as obesity, joint pain, infertility and heart disease. Not concerned about the infertility problem as I am done having children. However, I do not want to take the chance with the other problems and I am a witness to mother who went through the effects of not treating her hypothyroidism which also played a factor in decision.
