Cardio for people starting off at high weights.

Hows it going, i'm brett. Age : 21. starting weight is 410 and am just done being this way. I started off cutting everything i would normally eat by half. I walk 2.5 miles a day (mapmywalk.com) with many hills. The first week i weighed in , i had lost 10 lbs. I am just wondering if this is enough work for short term goals. I really didn't want to do too much too soon. Maybe if i lost 50-80 lbs then i could start doing much more. Just looking for some constructive criticism . Thanks all.

Good job getting started Brett. It looks like you are off to a good start and for your size walking is a great activity. Do you like to swim, it is also very easy on the joints and there are usually many kinds of classes to choose from. Keep your eating balanced and under control and avoid all the processed foods. Lean meats, veggies and complex carbs, avoid juice, sugars and trans fats. What I like to go by is: if it doesn't walk, fly, swim or grow, don't eat it. You can't really go wrong with that philosophy.

Keep it simple for now and just keep your self as active as possible. You are on the right track, good on ya! Check in and let us know your progress.

the only thing i would suggest is to slightly increase the distance you go each week and i mean slightly while getting dietary side of things worked out

First of all, congrats on making the plunge. I was at 312 when I started lifestyle change July 28. I've now lost 31 lbs.

For me, the elliptical has been a real life saver. Let's face it, on us bigger folks, running is really bad on the knees especially when we're out of shape. The elliptical machine saves joints and lets me nearly run! I can't recommend it enough.

Good for you and welcome to the group, I really hope you stick around. It is great to see you have the motivation. I recommend you take a pic about every 2 weeks starting now so you can see how well you are doing. Where you were compared to where you are and mentally where you wanna get.

Remember that the scale is a tool and even if you don't lose a pound during a week you could have dropped a pound of fat and gained a pound of muscle. This is why pictures help us as a tool so we can see our efforts change our bodies. Tape measures are also good for this. If you use a scale, a tape measure and pictures of front, back and side about every 2 weeks you will easily track your progress and also be able to keep motivated from seeing your work pay off.

Please keep us up to date on your efforts and feel free to ask questions or just let us know how you are doing.

Well its been Almost 2 months, still going strong. I fell off of the wagon a couple times, but nothing serious at all. I've lost 42 pounds bringing me to 368. I haven't weighed in the 360's since high school. And even then i was 380 and around. I am eating right. I feel positive, and have received many compliments . A few people at work have noticed and i've shared with them what i do, they are now doing the same trying to live healthy. Still have a long way to go, and will get there. Mostly walking. I still walk about 2.5 miles a day 6 days a week. job is responsible for some of the calorie burning. job consists of fast walking, sweating, and lifting heavy objects . sister started 2 weeks before me, but she did fall off. She is eating lots of what she wants, coke, and icecream. Not walking. She lost 25 pounds in a month, but i dont know how to get her back on her feet. Any suggestions? :)

starting weight was 286, I walk 4.25 miles a day, at a constant speed of 3.3-3.5 @ incline of 3 no more no less. Also I do a light jog at 5.0 incline 3, every 9 minutes, I know this really isn't to good haha, I should be doing a light jog every 5 minutes or even less. But I have seen and felt a progress in walking I started out doing like 2.5miles 3.0 speed couldnt even go further I slowly went up in distance to 3.5 and 3.1 speed. I now can do 3.4-3.5 4 miles with no pain in ankles now I just need to improve lungs and respoitory system further. I am down to about 258 in 2 months of just cardio, as well as weight training 3-4 times a week.

Hope it all goes well for you :], keep up the great work, NEVER MISS A DAY, (I mean this) every day I missed I payed for it in painful ankles the next day as well as laziness.

I love hearing of peoples successes, these forums are so much better than sitting and reading a paper or watching the news. Congrats people on your hard work and the rewards you are reaping!

And justin, you hit the nail on the head! Consistancy! Keep at it and make it your routine!
