Protein Bars

Post by synthysis »

What's the take on protein bars? Do they have too much sugar to be nutritious? Are they safe to replace an early meal with and eat them everyday? Obviously, they're a good source of protein, but are they better than protein powder or a glass of milk/soy?

*Most* protein bars are full of crap. Sugar alcohols, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils. Stuff we really don't want to put in our bodies. There are some more natural bars that are good for you. Elev8 Me is a good example. It only has whey, dried fruit and nuts. So just be really, really choosy.

Cliff bars aren't bad... they are made mostly from organic ingredients and don't have too much crap in them (no high fructose corn syrup, hydroginated oils or fake sugars). However... they are relatively high in sugar (around 20 grams) carbs and lower in protein (about 40 grams of carbs and 10 grams of protein). If I were looking for a protein bar (which I usually try to stay away from them) I would go for something with relatively low sugar and an equal balance of carbs and protein. Instead of protein bars for an early meal you might be better off having a few eggwhites and an egg with some oatmeal or high fiber cereal. That way you know exactly what your eating and you don't get quite as much sugar.
