I'm 55 YO. Been down for almost 4 years. I have had back surgery, foot surgery, shoulder surgery, carpal tunnel surgery on elbows and wrist's.
I have only 18% lung compacity but after breathing inhallers it jumps to 33 %. I have acute asma, I am allergic to cats dogs trees grasses sage and cotton.
After Lamenectomy ( L-5, L-4, L-3, l-2) things got worse. I refuse to do any pain relievers. I do take a nerve blocker and muscle inflameitory pill.
After all this I gained 25 lbs in 3 years, felt like crap mentaly and emotionaly.
I did go on a US Womens Ski Team Diet months back and lost 25 lbs in 2 weeks.
The diet worked but did little to help me feel good about myself so I started lifting weights where I put little strain on back ( I am limited to 45 # by the doctors)I cut way back on the nerve blockers ( Lyrica ) which helps me feels more energized. pain has increased but mind is more at ease.Cutting back on the meds also helps relationships with every body around.
Curently I do
bench press , 5x5, start @ 115 # end at 175 #
Incline bench press 3 sets , 95# x 10
Preacher Curls 85 # 3 sets of 10
Incline Bench Hamer curls 25# 3 X10
lying tricep extentions 65 #3 sets of 10
On a cable machine ( powertec)
Rope tricep extentions 70# 3 X 10
Pull downs 120# 3 X 10
Leg extentions 140# 3 X 10
leg curls 70# 3 X 10
one arm cable pulls 70# 3 X 10
Hyper extetions 3 sets of 15
Ab crunches 3 sets of 20
Rev ab crunches 3 sets of 15
I am unable to do jump rope ( back pain ) or hit the heavy bag ( breathing and back pain)
) although I do speed bag and stair stepper.
What I am looking for is stregthening legs. Question is : will a leg sled do the job for me while not putting to much strain on back. I am looking at a powertec leg sled.
I live in the mountains, joining a gym is out of the question so I built own gym ,( also for grandsonn who works out there 3 days a week.)
I had never worked out with weights before. I worked construction whole life so this is new to me. Lifting weights is very addicting. I don't want to screw this up, I appreciate any advice I get.
Leg Sled
Moderators: Boss Man, cassiegose
you don;t do all that in 1 day do you??? some of the exercisea ren't very good either
sleds are gereat for lower body minus impact so add them in if you like but i'd still like you to get into squats, deadlifts and lunges despite our injury issues..if we atrengthen/mobilise some accesory area's i can't see why these cant be used now if not later

I do not do them all in one day.
I do Chest and Biceps on the 1st day
Triceps and legs on the 2nd
3rd day off, then back to the rotation
I do abs and some cardio work every night which only includes a stair stepper and speed bag doing abs inbetween.
It usualy takes me 2 hrs per workout. breathing being biggest problem.
I take weekends off.

Slight Question. You say Carpal Tunnel surgery on the Wrists, so you're talking about a Carpal Release I presume, (where the Carpal Tunnel was cut to relieve pressure on the Medial nerve), but how so on the Elbow, the Carpal Tunnel is literally on the underside of the Wrist.
I'm just curious, not trying to sound rude or anything like that.
With the Allergies, have you tried something called Quercetin?
It's an Anti-histamine, and quite useful as an anti-inflammatory, of you want dietry sources, then things like Red Peppers, Onions, (red are best), and Apples are all sources.
Of course you would be wise to make sure the Quercetin in supplemental form, didn't conflict or compete with any meds.
I'm glad you're getting in to this fella, and I wish you luck. It's NEVER too late for anyone to make some sort of lifestyle change, regardless of what they've been through or done to themselves physically.

The surgery on elbows for carpal tunnel release ? .. I do not know the correct words for it but I'll try and explain. The wrist surgery effects only the thumb and next 2 fingers, the nerve under your elbow effects the little finger and the one next to it. nerve under the elbow was pulled up on top of arm , they cut a muscle there, laid the nerve in the cut and tied the musle back together to make sure it never slide back down under arm.. ( I have no more so called funny bone )
As they explained to me, your nerves should be like rubber bands and mine were like strings .
For allergies I take Singulair.

I'm still learning and looking for guildence.
As it is , I try not to put to much weight on back as I am standing , this is reason for " push downs " . I am constantly learning what type of pressure back can take. It has been a learning experence that when I make a mistake , I pay , for a considerable amount of time.
I will try not having 2 days off in a row.
On the advice of Bossman and Swanso5 I started lunges with only 50 lbs. I haven't experenced any additional pain due to back problem, but legs got a good workout, so I'll stay with it and increase slowly over time.
I am posting here to get help , so any suggestions are appreciated.
I have plenty of time to work out and I do so out of boredom some times. I'd like to ellimieate any exercises that are of little . Feel free to advise me

(Ahh right, I understood that thanks for explaining.)

(Not heard of this, so I might look into it.)
