WHAT REALLY WORKS THE CALVES?

Post by FeeFee »

I notice that I see very little movement in calves when I do calf raises...does that mean they arent really effective? What other exercises really work the calves?
I have almost no calf definition genetically, so I really have to work on it to see something.

I am no expert and others may offer better advice, but for me it seems that lunges, squats, leg press, walking and sprinting have made a huge difference in calves. legs are all muscle but it took me a while to get there.

well there isn't a lot of movement during them anyway and who wants giant calves anyway? it's a lot of work for litte reward really...sprinting uphill is way better and works better overall

Calves :

Genetics
Squat/jumps
Incline or at beach Walking/Running/Sprinting

calves raises = mostly a waste of time.

Agree with this one! I saw a guy at old gym once who had a terrific upper body and also had calves that were WAY too big. They looked ridiculous and I wondered if he really worked them hard or if they just popped from doing lower body workouts.

Genetics seem to be the factor here. Not many people have great calves. I'm a tennis player, so they get a good workout and look pretty nice. Because of regular tennis these days, I totally cut out all direct calf work.
