Hello to everyone...
Im a 5'7 62 kilo guy who is 4 months into a regular strength training routine . I follow a 4 dayz a week routine and its helped me to tone up upper body and gain *some* muscle mass. (tighter arms and chest) I use whey protein supplements to augment muscle growth but it aint givin the effect I desire... ie I dont think Im gaining too much muscle at a fast enough rate. Is there anyway I can increase this ?
Ive also started doing cardio on the other 3 dayz of the week.On doing so, I lost some weight (abt a kilo n a half) . Although in a perfect world this would mean Ive lost fat, Im not too sure about this.
A freind of mine ( a serious bodybuilder) recommends that I cut out the cardio completley and concentrate solely on weight lifting. Is this true? Can cardio actually *decrease* muscle ?
I have a lean upper body (no love handles or abdominal fat) but a slightly chubby lower body, and this is what I wish to reduce.
Should I continue weight training AND cardio or should I cut it out completley..???
How can I lose lower body fat while gaining upper body muscle ?
Hoping someone can help me with this...

Can cardio DECREASE gained muscle mass ?

muscle doesn't come easily ecspecially for someone your size so get your food in order and continue with your lifting program... as for cardio, the more cardio you do the more cal's you'll need to preserve and build muscle...for every cardio session you do, you'll need about 500 more cal's or thereabouts but everyone's different and depends on what intensity you do your cardio at..try intervals on the exercise bike with the pedal resistance up which can actually build muscle as it's resistance if it is hard enough

Cardio will not decrease muscle mass unless you don't consume enough calories to support the cardio and resistance training. If you have lost weight when doing cardio, you may not eating enough. Protein in itself does not increase muscle mass, adequate carbohydrate and protein calories along with your resistance training will increase muscle mass. Just due to the fact that you'll increase your calories, you will be increasing you protein intake as well, so no need for protein supplements. Many people eat more than the recommended amount of protein from food alone. Because the body cannot store extra protein, the excess and amino acids are broken down and used for energy or stored as fat. The body treats supplements the same as any excess source of protein. You can continue to weight train and do cardio, just make sure to increase your calorie consumption. When you attempt to lose fat, it is lost over the entire body, not just in one area.
I'm not sure if I'm understanding your question, sorry. You can lose fat and gain muscle mass simultaneously. To lose fat, you have to create a calorie deficit for the day. When you lose fat, you lose it everywhere. One pound of muscle contains 70-105 grams of protein. To add 1 lb of pure muscle in a week the body needs 10-14g of additional protein a day. The body can add only 2 pounds of muscle a week. Protein alone will not build muscle, it requires strength training and extra calories, specifically from carbohydrates. They fuel your muscles. By overloading your muscles with resistance exercise, not extra protein will increase muscle fiber size. If I understand correctly, your goal is to decrease body fat and increase muscle mass. You can accomplish this with weight training and cardio. Increase total calories, as you eat more food, you will be increasing protein intake at the same time. Remember, carbohydrate is protein sparing meaning it prevents the body from breaking down protein (muscle) for energy. Hope that helps.bigiz123 wrote:im a little confused, from what i see u can lose fat and gain muscle at the same time??? i thot this was impossible, because in doing cardio that means ur burning fat and by eating more calories to keep/gain muscle, doesnt that mean ur gaining muscle at the same time..?
you can so it at once but it's a very slow process...focus on leaning down with LITTLE less cals's and a LITTLE more cardio but uuse wts to maintain what muscle you have...simply by stripping fat away bidyfat % will go down and you'll look better also...then focus on building muscle with a LITTLE extra cals's and les cardio
