Anybody got any tips about working nights and eating right?
Been working nights for the past 4 years and was 10 and a half stone (147 lbs) when I started. now I'm close to 13st (184lbs) complete with beer and lovehandles and a developing double chin. Hate it all.
Tried lots of diets but never could stick with them.
Recently fearing possible health issues I am eating more veg, juicing and taking salads and tring to cut out all the poluting stuff I used to eat, including cutting down on alcohol. Still trying to quit the cigs. (Know they don't help at all)
Trying to lose the weight and tone up the abs as a start.
Read somewhere about the body not efectivley metabalising food after 8pm and was wondering if it was true and if so , is this why i find it so hard to lose the weight and why I have so little energy.
Would swimming help with overall muscle tone and weight loss?
Any help appreciated.

the problem is on sleeping
hi bro,the first problem isnt on eating but it's on sleeping , you dont get to sleep properly even if u sleep more hours during the day , your body needs the rest during the night more than anything else to get strenght ....on 2000 i used to work the night too ( and go to bed after 8pm)and i used protein bottles , i ate good food and i trains harder during the day but i could not gain mass and i lost alot of strenght and i felt loosing mass so i gave up on that night work ,believe me sleeping during the day is not healty at all , you should think of your sleeping b4 thinking of anything else , getting good diet and doing hard work out would be the next step to build up strong body and loosing excess of fat , good luck .Richard wrote:Anybody got any tips about working nights and eating right?

recently i found many articles saying night shift increases cancer risk here an article about it
http://www.mercola.com/2001/oct/27/sleep_cancer.htm
( anyway if u type night shits and cancer u will get many links in google)
there's another one here
Women who work rotating night shifts may have increased risk for developing colorectal cancer, according to a June 3, 2003, news release from Brigham and Women's Hospital. The Nurses' Health Study found that women who worked night shifts at least three times per month for 15 years or more had a 35% greater risk for intestinal cancer, including
* 41% greater risk of right colon cancer,
* 22% greater risk of left colon cancer, and
* 51% greater risk of rectal cancer,
than women who never worked rotating night shifts. The study was based on questionnaires from 78,586 women participating in the Nurses' Health Study who did not have previously diagnosed cancer.
Shift work is known to disrupt production of normal melatonin, a hormone influenced by darkness and responsible for sleep regulation. Data from this study support earlier laboratory findings that melatonin appears to inhibit the growth of tumors, and colorectal cancer patients may have Lower plasma LeveLs of melatonin compared to healthy individuals.

To lose the body fat, you will need to ( as I'm sure you already know), reduce your calorie intake. Do you have the opportunity to exercise at all? I would recommend that you see your doctor if you have not already about starting an exercise program. Calorie reduction in conjunction with exercise will enhance your results. You seem to be on the right track with the vegetables, salads, etc. Be wary of salad dressings which have more calories than the salad itself. Try reduced fat or fat free if you like them and watch portion sizes. Regular dressings will be ok if you can stick with an appropriate serving size. Whole grains, fruit, lowfat dairy products, if dairy products are not a problem for you are the foundation of a healthy diet. Reading the food labels is very important to determine the amount of calories that you are eating. Pay attention to the portion size on the food label.
The time of day has nothing to do with the way the body metabolizes food. Your body will use what it needs and store the rest as fat. Example:
You go all day without eating much. Finally at 8PM you are able to sit down to a meal. The body has been starved all day basically. It will use the fuel for energy and not store it as fat as long as you do not exceed your daily calorie requirements....which by the way needs to be determined.
