more newbie questions..

Post by Viprous »

Hello everyone, I tried to make this a NOT duplicate post and researched a little. Anyways...

Im in the military and I have terrible run times, I try and try but I despise running. Probably because I have a small case of asthma. I can run and legs have no problem, but lungs... I feel like Im dying! Is there anyway to improve the condition of lungs?

Also, How much water do we need ?

I have been doing the following things in workout so far:
3 minutes of jump rope
3 minutes of sit ups
3 minutes of shadow boxing. I know it sounds weird, but I am also training in brazillian ju jitsu and shadow boxing helps.

I repeat 3 times, then afterwords I might go jump on the trampoline out back and keep heart rate up a bit. I've been trying to do these things to improve lungs and lose weight.

Thanks, V/R

Hi Viprous, as a runner the best way to improve running time or the feeling you have on track is to run more. You could train for distance or speed. In your post you said you had terrible times... well the solution to that is to do speed training which are intervals of sprinting and jogging. In the sprinting phase try to work your time in the jogging/walking work on recovery... as soon as you can increase sprint time or decrease recovery time do it. In a matter of some weeks you will definitely increase your time. You can also increase intensity running uphill or using the inclinaison angle of the trademill (it is good to train at 2degrees or more anyway since it simulates for the wind on the track).

For the lung burning well it could be that you hyperventilate ie breath too much, relaxing is good and externalizing music, tv etc. are good in your level once you get better read on internalizing and properly listening to your body... you will improve your time. Also you should do cardio and strength training, uphills help, push ups, weight lifting too (although you can avoid it or do it to a minimum if you don't like it and exercice with your bodyweight)

As for water drink as you feel you need to drink ie if you feel thirsty drink, during running don't do it unless you run for more than 1 hour... it will bother your stomach and your breathing otherwise. it is better to drink small amounts of water more often.

I'm sure other people know better about cardio and stuff but if you have questions abour running i think i can help

You could try slowing your pace and lengthen your distance. If you train outside and thats the only time if affects you, you might need to talk to your doctor about allergies. I got this medicine called singular- and it helps quite a bit. Please keep me informed on what helps you.

Good points from the other posters. I think you would benefit from doing a variety of runs. Intervals are excellent for improving your speed. You can do a variety of intervals. You can do 100 meter sprints with 100 meters walks in between, and other times you can do 1/4 mile fast runs with 1/4 mile slow jogs in between. Other days you can work on endurance, which might help your lungs. This would mean slow jogging further than you normally do. Hope that helps.

Thank you all very much. I will be running again a few days after I get wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow. I'll hopefully see some results soon. Again, Thanks a lot!
