how accurate are they? it says im at 8.6% but i was expecting 10-12%

Those things can vary. I've used them to within 1% of skinfold measurements and I've also seen them be way off. The one thing I did notice about the one I used is if it was off, it was off consistently. It didn't give me any wild readings from measurement to measurement.

if you're referring to the calipers where you pinch 3 areas of your body - I would say they're accurate up to +/- 3-5% but...
You can do the full 26 site (or 26 area pinch) test to get deadly accurate measurement of your body fat
