Whey vs Soy Protein

Post by jasjoh »

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what kind of protein i should take. I do weight training 5 days a week and was told that whey would help. I was also told, by someone else that being a woman, i should take soy... Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks! I wasn't sure because all the guys I train with take whey. They thought I should take soy but wanted me to make sure. Now here is the next question. How much is enough?

I have read that Soy, can be not all it's cracked up to be, as apparently, it can inhibit the uptake of certain minerals, but the Isoflavones are good for controlling excess Oestrogen problems, so it does have it's pros and cons.

I would suggest you take small daily amounts, and always have things like Protein sources from Lean Flesh and Dairy sources too.

I normally take protein after weight training workout. And with that, only 21 grams. I try to get as much of it from diet so that i don't have to take that much powder supplement. That should work right? :?

Yep. Keep liquid protein to mosly after workouts, when you want speeded up things like Bloodsugar elevation, Muscle Glycogen replnishment, and thusly better recovery.

Other option is to have some post-workout, and then go home and have small meal perhaps.

If you chose to have a Protein powder again, you could either have a tiny bit with Breakfast, or sometihng like a Casein at night, for anti-catabolic purposes.

Other than that, just take a scoop post-workout as you described, and then stick to solid Protein, with perhaps some Milk during the day, if you want additional Calcium intake.

What's anyone's opinion of soy products (only for one meal a day)
such as Boca burgers, edamame, soy cheese, and the other products
made by Boca and Morningstar Farms?

Bossman is right that soy may not be all it's cracked up to b e. Whey after a workout is a better choice than soy because it works faster to start the tissue repair.

As for soy products like Boca, etc. Most of it is quite processed and not as "natural" as just having meat. Morningstar farms especially. If you aren't a meat eater or have a dairy allergy, it's not a huge deal to have one a day. I know nothing about edamame though.

Thanks for your thoughts - some of the stuff (Boca, etc.) is just a quick
meal every now and then.........
I didn't realized the stuff was that processed.......argh! :(
