Are Powerblocks all they seem to be?

Post by joeohlandt »

Hello again,

I'm new to this so please excuse me if question is redundant to you.
I have been using a regular pair of dumbbells, you know the plate with the spin on locks. I'm getting tired of moving/storing plates and want to make workout more continous.

In looking into the adjustable dumbbells and it seems from what I'm reading the Powerblocks are one of the better units. Is it the advertising hype or are they what they seem to be? Would appreciate your thoughts on the advantages or disadvantages of these or other types.

Thank you,
Jonny

In opinion, there are many advantages and disadvantages using these type of dumb-bells as follows. The first advantage is that of space and secondly, the time it takes to adjust the weight is far quicker. The disadvantages however are the restrictions it places upon your development or training goals. I'm not entirely sure how heavy these dumb-bells can rise to but i'm guessing its in the region of 20k (each). For many this may be enough but for others they simply arent heavy enough. Again it depends upon individuals goals/targets. The final disadvantage is that of price. The advertisements I have seen seem pretty steep especially considering you can buy the 'old school' dumb-bells at a far cheaper rate. Changing the plates on dumb-bells is a hastle, but hey it is only minor. Of course it's only you who will know what type of dumbbell is best suited to yourself. As for me, traditional weights are the real deal :D

Powerblocks Opinion

Post by joeohlandt »

Jonny and All,

I decided to order a set of Powerblocks against your opinion Jonny and I have to tell you that they are fantastic! The space savings, change over time and the comfort of the grip have made me a satisfied customer.

They come in weights up to 130 pounds each, which would be 59k for you. I feel they are easier to use than anything I have ever tried before due to the balance and I can hold on to them longer than a old school steel bar giving me a better work out.

I appreciate your opinion and your taking the time to answer me, but I have to say I would never even consider going back to the plates again.

Nice one Joe, glad they have made you a satisfied customer. I however will remain with beloved 'old school' dumbbells but good to hear that the powerblocks have been ideal for you. All the best in your training :D
