Returning from Ignorance
OK so I will try and be breif. I was in the Army for ten years and spent most of life under weight. 5ft 10 and 135lbs....I ran about 12-15 miles a week and played every sport possible....Now the sad part...I got married and and complacent and left the military...Now at 32 I am 178lbs with a spare tire and out of shape running. I had a knee surgery(meniscus) and really just stopped all sporting activity.....sigh. So Now I am back playing soccer mainly goalie but have desires to hit the feild, yet I wind out to easy. I go to the gym 3 dyas a week to try and cardio and abs but I find nothing gets me breathing hard other than running. I usually tire with muscle issues before I can get myself to a needed heart rate. I'm at a loss and can no longer rely on the old run 5 miles in a day routine. I'm starting from scratch and I need some advice. Ive got myself to cardio on the bike and eliptical 3 to 4 times a week, abs 5 times a week, and legs once and arms once. diet is actually fairly good I think I deal with about 1600(non fat from most) calories a day and started experminting with Hydroxycut. I guess I'm just looking for a jumping on point that can return me to at least half of once was life. I'm not looking to be a muscle head just tone and be able to enjoy running the feild without dying. Any advice would be great...thanks in advance.

A little more
So I have spent half the day reading throughout his forum and all the information is great. I'm currently setting up a workout plan that is focusing on Abs, Cardio and full body toning. I realize that maybe I should pay a bit more attention to the eating aspect than I do. At first I was more concerened all the incorrect things. What would you say that the average 32 year old 5ft 10 inch should weigh and body fat should be? The reason I ask is every site that Ive been to shows something different and the range is to far to target. I would like a general consensus opinion from people that are actually doing this for health and not for the almigghty dollar.
- you need a proper wts plan...muscle will burn more calories/fat than getting "puffed" will...seach "The Waterbury Method"
- cal's are too low...increase gradually to 2000 and see how that goes...you should reach 200 in no longer than 2 weeks from today
- hydroxycut won't do a thing
- for running don't go for endless runs...50, 100, 150, 200m tempo runs are better...the longer you go the fewer sets you do...search "running man" by christian someone starts with Thib.....
- don't focus on abs and cardio...focus on sprints and wts
- there's no set wt for any age...i'm 29 and 74kgs but i'm also a short arse...everyone is different...more importantly how do you look??

I will search the waterbury Method thanks...I guess I just never have been a very big weights person. All physical activity has had to do with Speed and endurance and again thats where Im picking up.

I was eating roughly 2200 but had dropped it to 1800 for weight loss purposes. Mind you I'm only interested in loosing maybe 7 lbs or so. Again I dont know what a good standard weight is for a 5 10 32 year old .

I am learning that through here. I see the emphasis on wts, squats, and core. So Core is more your center of gravity muscles?

Again thanks for that i'll research it. I need to resolve stretching issues first I think.

I guess I need to start off with a simple weight routine...What are your feelings on the Nautilis or similar workout circuits?

As for how I look I would say skin athletic with a light spare tire.... legs are scrawny with well developed calfs strong quads. shoulders are very broad with skinny yet well defined arms and chest. issue is the belt line. I have a slight excsess that was not there till a few years ago. i guess if you may it is the turned 30 and was lazy belt line. Thats why i was focussing on the abs issues along with cardio.

i'm not sure if your a baller or soccer player but both need sustained speed over slow speed endurance which is where the intervals and tempo runs from the other post come in
- it's always best to keep cal's the same but clean up your diet, than increase activity a little more then decrease cal's and repeat...the body doesn't like sudden changes like dropping 20% of it's intake quickly...imagine if you got a 20% pay cut tomorrow?
- could say that for core...it's where your power is generated like a building's foundation
- no machines free wts only...the waterbury is simple enough i thi9nk...if you need to spend 2 - 4 weeks simply learning the movements than start the actual program later
