these protein drink things...

Post by Rezeerb »

when you mixed them...do you have to use them right away or can you use whenever?

or does it depend on the brand?

They might last, but it's better to quaff them A.S.A.P. I think.

If you buy Protein drinks that are ready mixed and bottled, they are usually or should be vaccuum sealed, so they often can sustain their maximal state, for around 24 hours post-opening, say if you drink half, and save the rest for some later time, but after that their efficacy and state are degraded.

The argument for mixed powdered shakes are, they are exposed to air immediately, therefore degredation of product could be accellerated, so the quicker you consume one, the more maximal the benefit derived.

So based on that line of theoretical reasoning, I still say drink it sooner rather than later.

I don't know. You'd have to look on-line, or try a supplement / Healthfood shop.

If you do go for one, try to find one with Maltodextrin, as they're better, than ones without.

The thing is though, they're more expensive that way. Powders save you more money. Just buy a protein shaker to put your powder in it and post workout add water to it and shake for a quick post workout drink.

Who says?

I can buy ones with 50g Protein 50g Carbs.

I can also get it for probably little more than the price of 2 Chicken Breasts, and split it, half after workouts, half later, but the thing is I'm also getting that Maltodextrin as well.

I bet if someone could buy Maltodextrin in say sachets, and bought 2 sachets at 25g Malto, and 2 Chicken Breasts, it would be more expensive than the bottled drink, and the other bonus, is the bottle can then be used for something else, like Water storage perhaps.

As the drinks last about 24 hours post-opening, they may even last a bit longer when re-capped and refridgerated, (I don't bother refridgerating mine, they're kept within the stated temperature range anyway), and you can always then have a post-workout drink, 25g Protein, 25g Malto, and then go home, and have more Protein and Carbs from solid sources, if you want to. Then repeat the feat next workout, with the other half.

Most protein powders have almost zero Carb, so compared to a load of bottled Protein shakes, 20 bottled shakes at 1kg Protein, and a 1kg tub of Powder, might look more expensive, but you then get 1kg of bottled Malto as well, which most powders don't contain, which makes your Protein drink more benficial, so the extra cost is much better when all that Malto, helps boost bloodsugar back up, and replenish Muscle Glycogen, potentially meaning if you are someone who needs a few days off every few weeks, when you fade a bit, the better recovery from Protein + Malto post-workout, might just stop you fading altogether.

So to summise.

Protein powders. Just Protein, and almost no worthwhile Carb.

Bottled drinks. Protein + Malto = better recovery / possible faster gains. To me such benefits are worth the extra cost, and you don't get issues with mixing either

Still think powders are where the smart money is?

I'm just saying it's cheaper to get protein as powder rather than as a drink. Nothing else.

Right, well in that case, I agree. Though only on a cost issue. If a person can afford the extra money, I believe bottled, (with Malto, some don't have it) is a better choice.

Actually someone once used a chaper bottled version, with liquid Protein, but no Malto, however his was Whey, mine had Malto but Milk proteins, he reckoned his was better as it was Whey.

I told him Milk is 30% Whey anyway, so I didn't think whatever additional Whey he was getting, was more beneficial than all the Malto I was getting.

Plus I remember his were 2/3 the size, but only half the Protein, so to consume as much Protein as me, he'd have to have had about 33% more Liquid, (Water content), still get no Malto and save a measly 20p.

False economy.

Though for him, there was a cost issue, so he did decide to choose those cheaprr ones over mine. I reckon had he been more flush, I could have persuaded him to use the ones I did.

Also mine were Chocolate flavoured, his were Fruit flavoured. Never tried them, but someone else said they were okay, but had a slightly chalky or gritty taste, that took a while to get used to.
