Hi everyone. I'm a new poster to this forum. I'm a 59 year old , 5', 10" tall, weighing in at 233 lbs. due to a back injury, I have been almost sedentary for 18+ years until a treatment for back pain was found 3 months ago. I began working out with a friend (experienced weight lifter/ex-gym owner,) who is also about 56 years old. It's been 4 solid weeks of working out 5 consecutive days/week with Sat. & Sun. Off. Cardio has built up to 45 min/day with 30 min.s at target 80% max heart rate. I'm building muscle, but still have a roughly 30-33% body fat ratio. I'm taking Blood pressure meds, and am a type 2 diabetic; using Metformin (oral med,) Novolog injectable Insulin before each meal (25 units,) and Lantus @ bedtime. I'm also taking 30mg Slow-release Morphine For other back pain issues still unresolved (I WAS on 30 mg three times/day plus Methadone 10 mg 2x per day.). I'm almost off pain meds completely!
problem is that no matter what I do, I cannot drop this flab around middle and upper back and on the sides of Pectorals. workouts are alternated to focus on two different muscle groups each day with cardio at the beginning of each workout. I'm taking a Protein supplement 30gr./day, Creatine before working out and BCAAs too, besides eating a very healthy high protein diet. Should I try Lineolic Fat supplements? Any suggestions are welcome.

Hi Alfer, good to talk to you.
It does sound like you are more likely to succeed by altering your diet, as you seem like you are probably doing the right kind of things with your exercise, based on what you have told me.
One thing to be aware of is and I'm honestly not trying to patronise you, is that you are on more than one type of medication for varying reasons and one or more of those may be exerting some kind of influence on your weight, not least I would suspect the two insulin related medications, so you may find it nigh on impossible to shirt the last bit of weight.
I'm not trying to dash your hopes by saying that, I'm just trying to see the bigger picture for you, in case you had not necessarily been considering some of the eventualities, related to what we're talking about
.
In relation to the linoleic fat supplements, you could try those, but at this stage I see no real reason to do it, bearing in mind that it might be as well if you consider such things, to make sure there are no possible contraindications with such a supplement and any medications you would need to continue taking, were you to decide to start using a lipid based supplement.
I can't see why there would be, but in such an instance it's always better to use foresight than to gain hindsight, if hindsight can possibly be avoided.
As for your diet, what meals do you eat and what times do you eat? There may not be a lot of flexibility with the times, if indeed there's any need to be perhaps, but ascertaining what you eat would certainly indicate what might be able to be attempted, in order to try and help you.
The main thing is you've started to significantly overcome some serious issues, that have obviously dogged you for many a long year and it's a really positive thing to read about and the fact you have not let the grass grow under your feet and have been trying to capitalise on your burgeoning levels of physical capability, is something to be proud of and I'm proud of you man for grasping the nettle like this and if there is anything more you can still do to positively affect your weight, then of course we want to help.
