Is there a way to shadow a trainer without any experience?

Post by ItsMelissa »

I am 19 years old and still trying to figure out what I want to do with life. For three years I have done gymnastics and (for me) the best part was seeing definition of muscles. I would always get excited to see a more toned, defined, in-shape body. Nothing has interest me as much as personal fitness and working out. I'm even starting to eat healthier because of it. I have never worked in a gym before nor have I ever been trained by someone other than coaches. What I want to know is.... Is it possible to shadow a personal trainer without having prior experience? How can I tell if fitness is just a hobby or something I actually want a career in? Will a trainer allow me to shadow them for free, seeing as how I am not in school nor do I have any form of certification

Hi Melissa, it's good to talk to you.

The only thing I can suggest is if you go to a gym, then ask someone who works in there if you can follow them around one time and see how it goes, or ask one of your old coaches if you can.

Be aware though that the trainer might not want you doing that, if you were then to go around espousing the knowledge to others at the trainers detriment, but you never know.

Do you live anywhere where you can get free age related training, as part of some government initiative?

I shadowed a trainer years ago at no charge to me. It can't hurt to ask, but try to make sure the trainer has a good training reputation first, if at all possible!
