which muscle do they work...cuz armpit area hurts after doing em

well the basic chin up is good for all round upper body, if you grip the bar with the fingers facing outwards then usually good for the biceps, if fingers facing in usually forearm and good for back muscles to i think but i could be wrong

i think u got it the other way around steve--palms facing towards you works out biceps mostly (especially the negative) and palms facing out works lats and forearms the most

yeah if fingers are facing outwards.. then the lats work out the most..
its a god exercise to form a nice V shape of the upper torso..

then its half half .. but i always get sore in forearms for that one so i duno

pullups / wide grip with palms facing away - lats
hammer curl grip (the way most people do them) - bi's, forearms
chin ups - close grip with palms facing you - lats, bi's

if doing them properly (full range of motion) than you should get a better lat stretch in the bottom position with chins than pull ups so that's why your sore there
