Protein is not necessarily needed I don't think, it's up to the individual. Certainly for restoratitive purposes after workouts, a Protein and Complex and / or Simple Carb source would be most beneficial.

You could argue, that if you ate Protein before workouts with Carbs, the Protein could potentially prevent muscle burn, but I can't say that with 100% assurity, as factors like type of workout, longevity, intensity, come in to play.

Generally speaking then, should I have protein shake (I add banana, frozen yogurt, real milk, and vitamin powder as well) after the workout?

I'll have a small dinner before exercise to stay off hunger.

If I have the shake ahead of time I get bloated. I also didn't realize that protein is required after a workout to replace the "protein breakdown". Is that accurate?

Don't add milk. The Calories, and extra Protein, will thicken it up, and probably prolong absorpation, you want fast Absorption, of those Simple Sugar Carbs, so Water is best, as it can mix quite easily with a Fork, and being 0 calorie, should maximise synthesis, and Bloodsugar response.

If you want Banana, that should be fine, as unlike with solid food where you need at leats 10-15 minutes between Fruit and food ingestion, a Protein Shake, shouldn't really intefere with Fruit digestion, when they are consumed in an adjacent time frame.

I'd be inclined to also skip the Yoghurt, incase it inteferes with the protein shake too, being semi-solid.

Or alternatively, give the Shake and the Banana 30 minutes, and the go for Yoghurt.
