Crossfit and Weight Loss

Post by kerrazy »

A couple of years ago, I started Crossfit. I did it for 8 months and then I left for college. I was in decent shape before I left, but of course college hi t me. Freshmen year, I really didn’t workout. I should have so I ended up gaining about 8 pounds. And I didn’t fit as well in clothes as I once did. Blouses were tighter, legs didn’t look as good in shorts. The summer between freshmen and sophomore year, I decided to just workout in room. Pushups and squats. Mostly bodyweight movements. When I returned to school in the fall, I started going to the gym and doing crossfit-esque WODS. Nothing too extreme. But pushups, deadlifts, box jumps, toes to bar, kettlebell swings etc. Just to keep a steady weight rather than gaining more. Haven't really lost weight though. Now, this summer I plan on joining a crossfit gym again. And question is, will I be able to return to the weight I was back before I started college? I’m just worried that the fat I’ve gained won’t go away but I’ll gain more muscle under it and then be bigger. I don’t know much about weight loss or how it works. So please don’t be condescending when explaining this to me. Thanks.

Hi Kerrazy, good to talk to you.

An extra 1lb of muscle burns an additional 45-50 calories per day, so you would probably replace some of the fat with muscle, which is a very good thing, not least as a muscle building process can help to strengthen bones and connective tissue as well.

As for wondering whether you can be the person you were back then, then from a physical standpoint yes you could, but you might find your weight ends up a bit higher, but if that's a bit of added muscle then that's a good thing, so don't worry about that :).

Will I be slimmer even with the gained muscle? I'm just worried about fitting better in some of favorite pants. I'm so vain. :D

You could end up being slimmer yes, as because, as stated, muscle can help to burn fat it would still be the case that fat loss could exceed muscle gain, therefore you'd gain muscle but still lose some weight overall, as opposed to just replacing any lost fat with muscle.

IMO- having a little more muscle always makes pants fit better anyway. :thumb:
