Training for a circus performer

Post by redwhite »

This Summer I'll begin training as an aerialist (hoop, silks, etc.) in a circus. If you're not familiar, here's an example of what an aerialist does: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEd6FWhwQ0I" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I need to have a lot of core and upper body strength, but also allover strength. I'm already good on cardio ( current job with the circus gets me plenty of that). I also need flexibility and balance, and it's important that I don't get bulky. The gym isn't an option, so I'm looking for workouts that focus on using body weight.

I have about six months to get myself in the condition I need to be in to start training (I can't even do one pull-up right now). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I'm female, 5"9, 160lbs.

Hi Jane, good to speak to you.

Out if nterest why is the gym not an option, is it down to cost, being too far from one, or concerns about becoming bulky in some way?

I can certainly provide a bodyweight workout to being with, but I'm just curious as to the no gym option as there might be other options to possibly explore.

The gym isn't an option because we're always traveling. Most of the performers maintain their strength by practicing and performing their most rigorous acts every day. We also don't take equipment like weights and such along with us because it adds to travel costs. So I would be grateful for any advice you could give!

Squats, 2 sets 10 reps

Lunges, 2 sets 10 reps

Deadlifts, 2 sets 10 reps

Bent over rows, 2 sets 10 reps

Vertical flyes, 2 sets 10 reps

Shoulder press, 2 sets 10 reps

Planks 30-45 seconds.

You can do this every other day 3x a week and it should work for you :).

try Start Bodyweight. It sounds just like the kind of program you're looking for if what you are after are strength gains.
