The British Isles doesn't suffer such things much.

One thing that happens, is there is borderline between the North American and Eurasian Plates that runs south through iceland and then roughly in line with northern Spain it goes east, bordering the African Plate and extends through italy and eventually into Turkey and beyond.

Britain is not close enough to any of these geological features, to suffer serious earthquakes, the largest land based quake I think ever recorded that I know of, was a 5.4 in North Wales in 1984.

However in general, tremors from time to time, can get big enough enough to cause mild structural damage.

As for tornados or hurricanes, they rarely occur, although rather oddly when a tornado occurs, it can literally be so small as to damage a single house / property.

I have seen news footage of a small hurricane, around 6-7 feet tall before now, causing minor damage to a persons back garden, without damaging any part of neighbouring houses, except for pieces of fence and / or slate falling onto their properties.

Sometimes a small tornado ravages a back alley, damaging parts of a few properties, but fizzles out, because tornados that are the size of a tall , obviously cannot build in intensity or strength, so as to initiate or culminate in many square miles of destruction.

Europe does have distasters sometimes. Italy had a serious earthquake in recent years and Sicily has mount Etna which has erupted in the last 20 years I seem to recall.

I think turkey gets it sometimes too, owing to it being near the edge of Eurasian plate.

This link actually describes what Italy went through last year and what recently happened to the same area.

Italian Earthquake Zone

There are other disasters that happen though, such as mining collpases and the like. This particularly horrendous disaster, happened in Aberfan Wales in 1966 and killed many people in a school.

Aberfan Disaster

Britain did havve a hurricane in 1987, which I remember witnessing on the news, that battered the south coast with winds around 120 mph top speed, damaging some houses, causing Kew Gardens to lose irreplacable rare trees and causing large parts of the South East to have their power turned off completely as a precaution.

The main issue stemmed from one or two shipping vessels in the Bay of Biscay, who were being used in part along with tracker bhouys, to collate weather evidence and which had reported a storm like occurance heading in the direction of Britain, but then being pushed by westerly winds in the direction of America. The Met Office lost contact with the region for a few hours, during which time the accumulating winds rerouted and by the time it was realised what was happening, the Met Office were unable to formulate a ready to use emergency bulletin, forewarning of the events about to unfold.

The problem had been brought up by a weather presenter called Michael Fish, who had been sent a letter by someone, asking about a possible hurricane that had been touted about and on air he told people not worry.

He was crucified by some people, within 48 hours after the event, because some people didn't realise he was a spokesperson for the meteorological office and his job was obviously to represent the evidence, not collate it or analyse it, just to format it into a laypersons understanding; nor did such people know why this supposed misinformation had been allowed to be broadcast; they were just lashing out in disbelief and anger really I feel.

So Britain and Europe does get things happening from time to time, but mostly central and northern Europe and Britain, largely avoids many serious geological ramifications, that other areas of the world do not, largely down to distant proximity to tectonic plates and volcanos and lack of unusual weather phenomena, caused by winds and temperature actions.

interesting that's what i thought on britian. Never heard of a tornado so small it only damages one yard. LOL

flooding from rivers especially in the spring and tornados are most likely where i live in the midwest. we had one tornado a block away a few years ago. It was small though but damaged 15 or so houses. And ofcourse we do have extreme cold!! :)

I'm honestly not being funny, but if someone was feeling the effects of an earthquake, why would believing it was a ghost be considered a natural response, as you intimated, as that implies it's fairly common human behaviour to interpret earthquake activity as ghost activity and I'm not sure that sort of assumption about earthquakes, is a natural or common psychological response to be honest.

I'm not being rude about your girlfriend, I'm just being objective :).
