Cutting Carbs but worried about not getting enough calories!

Post by ossm »

Hey everyone, I am a new member here. I am on the journey of taking myself from 195lbs and +25%bf to a 6 pack wielding 23 year old. goal is to get myself around 10-12%bf (a level I dont think I have ever had since birth) and likely in the 170s as far as weight. Throughout life I have gone through spurts of excellent fitness and poor fitness and diet, however I am motivated to make it right now. Tuesday will be day 9 of process in which goal is to go 100 consecutive days in a workout plan and diet. current workout right now involves a hybrid program of Beachbody's Insanity & p90x programs. For me, goal is to burn the and get cut. For once I want to be able to see muscles. I was a 4 year varsity baseball player in both high school and college, so I am an athlete and not used to busting , however for me I was always screwing up diet - thus ruining results. I am tired of being the chubby guy and I want nothing more than to be able to take shirt off around people with confidence. I have a nuitritionist who gave me this recomendation and I want to see what you guys think:

she told me for a month to completely cut all carbs from diet (including fruit and veg). I am a protein guy in general: i love egg whites, grilled chicken, salmon for the most part. So essentially day is eating these things, I am worried however that while I do the workouts, I will not be eating enough to make sure body doesnt go into starvation mode. She said that "when doing the carb routine, your body is forced to burn fat for energy which provides a tremendous amount of calories. people dont typically plateau or go into starvation mode on this diet unless they try to do it too long i.e. months. you should be fine with 30 days" Do you guys agree? please help, I will be miserable if I waste 30 days working out and getting no results because of the diet!

Ketotonic diet for a month? I disagree. Yes you'll burn fat because the body will source the fat for energy, but you may have effects on bloodsugar, sleep patterns, cause lethargy and concentration problems.

You may also find workouts difficult to finish. People have been noted to get dizzy spells training on empty, (training with an empty stomach), you might possibly experience this if such incidences are based on zero carbs when training, or actually zero calories, though I cannot verify this as exactly which of those two things related ot the dizzy spells in people I don't know.

It was a past member who works a trainer who brought this up, as it related to clients.

Also I cannot really comment on the nutritionist, as I don't know anything about their educational background and the credability thereof, whereas I am not qualified, but I am offering you insights, based on experience and self teachings, for free, so it costs you nothing to disregard or endorse anything I say, which hopefully in regard to the former you won't

I would advocate a limit of 20-30g carbs with meals, certainly don't go below 20g.

Also if you cut carbs completely and then add them back in, you could possibly gain some weight back, as the body would not be sourcing fat to replace the carb energy you deprived it of, so the body may decide to store more dietry fat and hang onto existing stores, when it is being given the licence not to have to scavenge as much dietry and stored fat for energy anymore, especially whne you were increasing your caloric intake and the body had gotten used to less, ais t would view some of the added calories potentially as excess ones and store them.

Some people can cut a small amount of carbs and replace them with fat, if their intake is sensible not excessive, when trying in later stages to tweak weight loss, as opposed to making initial wholesale changes. This creates the fat for energy scenario, but keeps calories fairly consistent by maintaining not significantly cutting calories.

If you aim for a basal amount of carbs in all meals, or all bar the last meal of the day, you can limt them, but also have a consistant methodology relating to them, so you wouldn't need to change tack drastically at some future point.

Hoepfully all that makes sense.

What foods do you currently eat and what times do you eat them?

Boss Man- I agree 100% with everything you suggested, Carbs (especially in the form of veggies) should be kept in your diet even if reduced drastically and if 100% removed then might cause weight gain after adding back in. I once went on the Atkins Diet for 2 weeks and lost 10 lbs but ended up gaining back 30 lns!!
