Help

Post by eidox »

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping you can all offer me some advice and help. In the last year I've been slowly losing weight, initially a result of watching what I ate and generally trying to cook healthier and avoid the garbage. I then started running and also very moderate wieght lifting at home, which had some minor results. In the last few months (since December really) I've been hitting the gym Monday-Friday and really watching what I eat, tracking all meals etc. Initially I was led to believe that I should be taking in 1200 calories a day in order to lose a decent amount. I was burning off about 300ish calories a day whilst doing some cardio (sometimes interval, sometimes not) and also lifting weights etc. I was eating the 300 calories back so I still met 1200 a day as I know you shouldn't go under about a 1000. In the last month or so, frustrated with not seeing the progress I wanted, I upped the training and also re-evaluted food intake. This took me to burning off nearly 600 or so calories a day (before breakfast) and eating a net intake of about 1500 calories. Recently however, I've been told that I should be taking in more like 3000 calories a day, due to size, weight and amount of exercise (I weigh 172-173 pounds, I'm 6ft 3 and burn about 700-1000calories most mornings)I'm now burning off 700-1000 calories a morning (including 5k runs almost every day, weightlifting and core work as well as other cardio) and am taking in 3000 calories a day in a ratio of 60% from protein and 40% from carbs as I was advised this by brother who studies sports science and has for many years now (I initially thought that was a LOT of calories from protein, but since incorporating almonds into diet, it's not too hard to get there). The issue is, I'm not really seeing (or at least don't feel like I am) any progress in terms of weight loss and I'm a bit stumped and pretty frustrated considering the amount of work I'm throwing at it. Any help in this area would be much appreciated, I don't claim to know very much about this and as you can see it has been something of a learning curve already with constantly discovering I'm actually not eating ENOUGH (quite counter-intuative).I stick to a rather rigid diet and, whilst there is the odd cheat maybe once every few weeks, it's only a small splurge such as a bun or a biscuit and nothing too major. Thanks

A simple analogy, would be to work off a principle of 15 calories per lb of bodyweight.
