Time interval between meals and workout

Post by cooldreamz83 »

I mostly do cardio exercise during workout as primary aim is weight loss. I wanted to know what should be a minimum time interval between meals and exercise in order to get more positive results. Is it benefitial to drink energy drinks like getorade as compared to water during workouts.
- Thanks.

Ideally eat a meal about 1-1.5 hours pre workout, especially to make use of the Carbs, and as soon as you can afterwards, to aid recovery.

You can drink energy drinks during the workout.

One possible theory is is if consume Glucose, (Dextrose), during workouts, you will have a ready Glucose source, which means the body might use less or no Muscle and Liver Glycogen, than it would otherwise.

I can't say that for sure, but it is worth it.

I personally don't do that and stick to water, as I like to keep efforts / results pure. I think if someone is using a drink like that to assist their efforts, they aren't getting a real indicator of their ability, when it's enhanced like that.

Plus I don't want to spend the extra money, just to potentially get a couple fo extra reps maybe on exercises.

Though sure if you want to do it, go for it.

Exactly. A good choice as the Sugar source, (typically Maltodextrin), will spike lowered Bloodsugar back up.

Though having a meal within 30-60 minutes, is also preferable. In that instance have a high GI source to get the spike, so something like White Rice, Sweet Potato, Red Potato etc etc.

Or an alternative option, a shake, and then maybe some food. In that instance, you've already had the Bloodsugar elevator, so no need to have something like White Rice, so keep your Carb sources low GI, when you have the meal, (Broccoli, Mushrooms etc etc), but you can then top up the Carb intake with a complex source.

So you have 3 basic options there to work with.

It's fine to eat as soon as you like to before your workout, as long as it doesn't make you sick to your stomach. I always eat about 10 minutes before working out. I don't recommend going more than an hour between eating and working out.
I sometimes use drinks such as endurox or accelerade during workouts, or gel packs during cardio. Needs for eating during a workout can depend on the person. I have a super fast metabolism and no matter how much I eat I need mjore during workout. For soem people this isn't necessary at all. You can try it and see what works best for you.
