Hey georgiaboy
First off, eating only cottage cheese and salad is not enough and you will not be getting enough nutrients within your diet. You need lots of variety to keep your metabolism high.
So slimply put clean up your diet. I always say this because it's a must. Aim for 5-6 small meals each day, eating at least every 3 hours to keep your metabolism firing. Make sure your diet is rich in lean proteins (chicken, lean deli ham, turkey fish, whey protein, egg whites etc.), healthy carbs (whole wheat pasta, rice & breads, fruits, veggies, etc.), and healthy fats (natural peanut butter, nuts, flax, fish oils, etc.). How much you should eat is dependant upon your metabolism, so if you're looking for an accurate amount, get your RMR (resting metabolic rate) tested. You can do this by going here (http://www.virtualfitnesstrainer.com/co ... _Rate.html) but more importantly than that just listen to your body. Also, reduce the amount of sugary sodas and drinks you consume, or better yet, just stop drinking them. They're empty calories anyway. Stick with water, tea, and Crystal Light.
As far as exercise goes, it doesn't have to be difficult. You don't have to invest in a shitload of workout equipment. You don't need a personal trainer. You don't have to buy an expensive gym membership...although if you're serious about getting into shape, a gym membership will only help, but be sure to shop around for the best deal. It's simple - get in at least 30+ minutes of cardiovascular activity 4-5+ times a week or 3-4 times a week to maintain. Cardio isn't just running 5 miles on a treadmill. It's jumping rope, riding a bike, taking the dog for a jog, etc. Basically anything that gets your heart rate pumping. Cardio, along with a healthy diet, is what burns fat. Now if you want to speed up that process, start some weight training or resistance training. You don't need a ton of expensive stuff to do so, either. A medicine ball, an ab/yoga ball, and a set or two of dumbbells and you're pretty much set. You can buy a video, but you don't have to because you can find the same information and instructional exercises online such as http://exrx.net/ or http://shapefit.com/
Hope that helps! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
