I imagine it's possible you have wondered more than once, if it would have been preferable to follow the doctors advice back then, irrespective of what you were witnessing in front of you, which seems like a pretty poor example of medical strategy, to dispense advice that they actually contradict and worse right in front of the patient.

Re: Sisters in Sweat Journal (but all are welcome)
Bossman this was back in the late 50s and 60s so a much different time and lots of professionals in many professions smoked. Unfortunately for many not something easily quit. Certainly wasn't for me. husband and I tried one time in Rochester, with a relaxation type one and he loved it....didn't do it for me. I have been smoke free now for 17 years as the day after we arrived here, I was rushed to the hospital and was in ICU for 17 days on a ventilator and tubes coming out of all parts of body. When I finally got out 21 days later.....I was told, I smoke, I die, so I wanted to live so I have never touched another. In fact now the smell makes me sick. As opposed when I first I got I'd sniff it was we walked.....sad..... but then whole family smoked and so did all the relatives as I said different times. Mind you the warning was on the package but we all smoked anyway.
Well I am off to read stories and go off line to play games.
Have a nice day.
Sue

Unbelievable as it may sound now, when mom was pregnant the first time (1959), her doctor recommended she take up smoking as a way to minimize weight gain.
This may be one reason I do not blindly trust the advice of doctors!
Thanks for the good wishes, Sue. Sorry about the wakeful night! When the MIL asked if I wanted her to bring the piano to her son, I texted DD to make sure they wanted it. She said yes, but they would come get it. I hated to think of them driving 2 days each way, pulling a trailer, (especially since I think the lights went out on their trailer!) when the MIL was offering, but I guess DD knew better than I did about how it was going to turn out.
I agree--all those fires are such a sad situation.
Yay on the walks, Chris! And thanks.
We did our normal Sunday walk with the pupster this morning. We've been adding in 2 min. running intervals--5 of them today--so maybe we'll eventually start running again for real.
It was a beautiful day.
I'm going to go see if I can cut the last few pieces of shoe molding for the downstairs bathroom. I've been 90% done with that project for weeks, but need to finally get to 100%!
Hope everyone is enjoying a lovely Sunday~

Re: Sisters in Sweat Journal (but all are welcome)
Thanks Sue for your comment on journal!
It's appreciated and Mo as well too and chris too.
uncle was on a respirator. He had a heart attack and really the only way to keep him alive was a feeding tube and a respirator. We knew he wouldn't want that so we let him pass.
Back then smoking was common even in the 80's. people smoked on airplanes and in places of work, etc. People even smoked while pregnant like mo said.
Mo i know a piano is free. But sometimes a keyboard works out well too. He might be able to find a cheap one on craigslist. their are different number of keys. The piano has 88. teacher i use to have said that all her students had keyboards. They are just easier to move and
don't have to tune them, etc. i play on keyboard now pretty much all the time.
Mo do you want to do a race again?

Hi All,
Saturday 30 minute walk and then a stroll with DH for 40 minutes or so. Today we went out and found a nice waterfall. It was a 30 minute walk in and back out. Most of the walk was pretty good but the bit down to the falls was steep!
Oh I actually pulled the bagpipes out of the case and gave them a try. Still hopeful I can get somewhere with it.
We are here for you Becky!
Thanks Mo! Good luck on your running intervals.
Have a great night all!

How are you doing on the bagpipes Chris? Are you still getting free lessons? The waterfall sounded wonderful.
Where about do you live again Chris if you don't mind saying in general. over by toronto?

Yes indeed a different time, where foolishness was more rife, but if anything it might have increased weight gain, because then you got added puppy fat as well as the weight of the retained tar in the lungsFitafter50 wrote:Unbelievable as it may sound now, when mom was pregnant the first time (1959), her doctor recommended she take up smoking as a way to minimize weight gain. This may be one reason I do not blindly trust the advice of doctors!

Hi Becky,
Bagpipes are going slow but I am seeing improvement. Our instructor says the pipes I have are not good. They belong to the academy so I haven't put any money into them. It has got me thinking about buying own but they are really expensive!
No free lessons here Becky. We were doing practices over the summer and that didn't come with a cost.
I am on the east coast Becky. In the Atlantic provinces.
Boss Man there were some crazy ideas out there but everyone is learning more as they go.
TTFN!

I hear you on the bagpipes. I quit really summer playing much. I'm trying to get back into it now though and am trying to play 30 minutes to an hour a day. I'm not taking lessons though.
It really wasn't that long ago that people smoked while pregnant. even when i was a teenager in the 90's i knew someone that did.
What are you guys doing for halloween?

Re: Sisters in Sweat Journal (but all are welcome)
Hey All,
Some good news to report, I noticed yesterday that pants were feeling looser so I checked the scale (which I have been avoiding) and it seems I am down 2 pounds.
I am cautiously optimistic that things are going in the right direction for now. I have been watching what I eat and dialling back the portion sizes. Now I plan to keep that up and add healthier foods (veggies
) into plan. walking is helping, but not this week.
Monday there was too much smoke (forest fires), Tuesday I ran late and couldn't take the car and then worked throughout lunch.
Today may be the same as we are in for heavy rain.
These weeks happen.
At least I have learned to roll with it and not beat myself up when life plots against me.
It is hard to sit indoors and play music in the summer and a break isn't always a bad thing. I like lessons and practice time. It is "me" time and a bit like a meditation as I am only concentrating on one thing.
I hope you keep up the piano playing but only if it makes you happy.

Hi everyone , Well today I think Winter is here in Ohio. I had to go out and cover Chicken and Hens (plants) as it is going to frost tonight . Not much new here . Knee is getting better but will never be as good as before . I just have to take it easy with it . Still going to the Y and I think some of fat is shifting around as jeans are a little more loose Scale is down about 2 pounds so all is good. Am going to Hospital tomorrow for a couple tests . Nothing serious I think but I will know later in the week.
I am enjoying the Silver Sneakers classes . Mo I know you know what they are since you work at the Y. We go to different ones as the one lady has to drive 25 minutes to ours so we take turns going to hers one week and she to ours the next . We like the one that is away better than the one near us but when bad weather gets here we won't be able to get the one at a distance . The instructor is so much fun at the far away one. She plays oldies and the class sings along with them while we are doing our workout . The instructor which is at the Y that is just 7 minutes from house does the same warm up and it is 10 minutes long and so is the cool down so we really only get a 25 minute workout plus she is always late. But it is what it is .
Well I just wanted to stop in and Hi . Off to think about dinner.
Chris glad to see you lost those 2 pounds . Good Job .

Re: Sisters in Sweat Journal (but all are welcome)
Afternoon,
Well I am behind again as I see Molasses' post is last Sunday.....sorry ladies but been busy cleaning and doing other stuff too.
Molasses, mom smoked through all of us being born and afterwards too. Came from an all smoking family, so of course, I eventually did too. Had to get permission but I was sneaking around before I did. Apparently I forgot to clean up some ashes outside bedroom window. So dad knew and at that point I asked for permission (I was 14 and was told fine, but at home only not in school) Kids did smoke in the bathrooms back then, but I didn't was afraid I'd get caught.
Oh Molasses, having worked in that environment, as you know, you can't trust them all. The bad eggs ruin it for the good ones.
Unfortunately Chuck and I were enlightened when he started his PhD in medicine and so was with our "further" doctors and "certain people" were given a lot of leeway and sorry to say so were women then too. It's changed now thank goodness but way back it hadn't as of yet.
Dean Ford always said to go to a doctor affiliated with a University/Med Center as they are up on the latest stuff and they have the most up to date equipment.
I slipped and fell in Rochester on the floor in the basement area and Chuck and Mr. Bo heard it 2 floors up and off to emergency we went .....Chuck did cheat after waiting 10 minutes he said "she's Dean Ford's secretary or something to that effect" and next thing the head of neurology was there and taking me in. I was alright but got some meds for it and home we went.
Same here when we moved here and the second day I told Chuck "I can't breathe" and he called the ambulance and off to the University Med Center.....then had me in ICU 30 minutes after I arrived. I didn't know as I was "out of it" with an mask on face pumping in oxygen.
All the doctors I go to are affiliated with UMC.
Sorry about the MIL and hope your DD can get the piano soon.
Yeah so many people lost their lives and all they had....it brings tears to eyes.
I see you had a nice walk last Sunday with the pupster (I love that name) Hope you can get back to some running again.
I hope the cutting of the shoe molding in the bathroom worked out.....and you are now at 100%
Bekah you are quite welcome on the journal comment. I commend your family Bekah....to have to live like that is not something I'd want either.
Chris I see you and your hubby got some nice walks in last Sunday and found a nice waterfall too. I see you also got out your bagpipes too. Wish I could hear you play.
We don't do anything for Halloween any longer, Bekah. In fact we don't even get kids anymore, used to when we first moved here for many years but now no one.
Chris, kudos on the looser pants and the 2 pounds lost. Kudos on the portion sizes and what you're eating. Everything in moderation, I have said for years.
Oh Chris, we feel for you as it's been terrible here also. I have stayed inside as I can't stay at long even with oxygen jacked up.
I have the same philosophy Chris, sometimes "life, work, etc" gets in the way of stuff and you roll with the punches and then get back on track again.
As you know Chris I am a big proponent of "me time".....I get it every Sunday.
Bekah if you enjoy the piano keep playing and learning and have fun....that's what is most important. Plus doing so that way "you will improve gradually at your own pace".
I see it's winter in Ohio, Bama. It's still summer in California.....at least in neck of the woods. We are headed to the mid 80s today again and tomorrow and then finally our low 70s will be back PTL
Hope your chicken and hens (plants) are alright. Glad to hear your knee is getting better. Yeah me too as knees will never be the same again but such is life and age LOL
Kudos on the loose jeans and the scale being down 2 pounds also. I hope the tests go well and all is well with them.
Glad you are enjoying the Silver sneakers classes. Sorry about the one further away being better and I agree after reading your description I'd go with the one further away also. However, having lived back east I know when "winter" arrives....travel time is a BIG factor.
So what did you finally "think of" for dinner.....
Well I am off too now that I caught up and off to read stories....
Hope you all had a nice weekend and got some "me time" on Sunday and have a great week and Halloween too.
Sue

Re: Sisters in Sweat Journal (but all are welcome)
Hi All,
Well the weather didn't cooperate last week much but I shouldn't let that stop me. So I did walk to work (20 min) on Thursday, lunchtime walk (30 min) and then a walk home (20 min) as well. On Friday morning youngest was worried about being late for school and getting upset. We didn't have the car, so, once I was ready we did a light jog to his school (8 min) then I left him and headed to work (25 min). No walk at lunch time but I did get walk home (20 min). Saturday morning was lessons. Saturday afternoon was lovely, but DH and I had no energy, but we got out on our bikes anyway. We went for roughly an hour ride. Sunday was cleaning the bathroom and straightening up the house. As soon as I could I got outside and talked some raking. I kicked the boys out after lunch to set out the decorations for Halloween. They even got out their scooters and zipped around in the driveway.
Sue we all get busy and get behind.
Hi Bama, congrats on your 2 pounds as well. Glad you are enjoying the classes.
Thanks Becky, keep up the things you enjoy like piano.
