Les, yes he is running with me. Or should I say ahead of me!! He finished last nights run 3 minutes before I did! Fast little bugger he is.

thanks Lu!! Yes, the weather here currently is 70 degrees. I would like it to be a bit colder than that for a race, but still is nice.

Thanks Bonnie! probably won't be wearing any bells...that would drive me crazy, although I'm sure there will be some that do - and luck they'll be right behind me the entire race!

Tough race today. It was hot and humid - about 75 degrees with the wind blowing from the south @ 20 mph. The course was nothing but a continuous series of hills, up and down, up and down, don't think there was one step that was on flat ground...ugh! I ran okay, didn't set any PR's today - but son....well that's another story..he had a PR today of 28:44! He averaged a 9:14 per mile pace, and finished nearly 3 minutes faster than his previous race! Ahhh to be young. Nothing but good racing years ahead for him - he is just getting started. Onwards and upwards (as Noosk would say) !! :P
I couldn't seem to get rhythm today - felt like I was struggling from the first step - but I just kept head down and forged ahead. There were these 2 young ladies, all dressed in their candy cane socks and santa hats who were ahead of me, then stopped to walk, I passed them and a few moments later here they come, blasting past me....then on the first BIG hill they stopped to walk, and here I came trodding up the hill like an old work mule..and just as I reach them, they start running again - gahhhhh!!! They did this several times but in the 2nd mile on the second loop they stopped to walk the hill again, I passed them and picked up pace...daring them to try and pass me again! I never saw them again! ha!!  classic case of the tortoise and the hare - or should I say bunnies.

Great job on the race, sounds like a tough one with all of those hills

OK, you're not allowed to complain about 75 degrees    It is going to be a high of 7 here tomorrow. Plus we are in the middle of a blizzard. Ahhh, life in Wisconsin  So I would definitely settle for 75

You have the patience of a saint, I'd of likely tripped one of them so they other one had to stop & pick her buddy up, but thats me ..high five the kid for me & better luck on the hills on the next race ;)

Sounds like fun, despite the heat that we ALL would love right now ;) You should be so proud of your son and even happier that you can do this stuff (hills and all) together - :)

I love reading therse race stories. The 10K I ran on Thanksgiving was nothing but hills and I must have battled the same two run walkers.

Would it be beneficial to do a short 10 minute "wakeup" workout first thing in the a.m.?

Something quick, but productive - like:

1 minute warmup - 30 secs jumping jacks/30 secs windmills

1 minute burpees
1 minute squats
1 minute bicycle crunches
1 minute pushups

1 minute rest

1 minute lunges
1 minute plank
1 minute step ups
1 minute rev. crunches

Then do them again in the evening (9 p.m. - ish)?

This would be in addition to regular workout of outdoor distance training and/or HIIT interval training.

Any thoughts, recommendations?

That sounds like a great idea! I should incorporate something like that to mornings. I get up at 5:00 and I am always struggling to get out of the door in time, but but if I could drag myself out of bed a few minutes early for a short workout like that would probably make day a little better - thanks for the idea :D

Sorry I haven't been around much this past week. dad passed away last Wednesday. He was 75 years of age. As most of you know, he had struggled this past year with numerous health issues and had been in and out of the hospital several times. He fought as long as he could, but now at least he is at peace and his struggles are over. I believe he is with his Heavenly Father and has joined his family members and friends who passed on before him. I will miss him everyday for the rest of life. He was a Vietnam veteran and was buried with full military honors, as he deserved.
I wrote this for his funeral:

A life well lived with honor in his steps,
Truth in his voice,
Sacrifice in his actions,
And love in his heart for his Lord, his family and his country...

Rest in peace Dad.
