Oh I prize his above mine, no doubt. I hope it is teaching him not only that hard work can pay off, but that setting a goal and attaining it is a strong character trait to develop early in life. I hope it serves him well in his adult life. :D

We went out for a 3 mile run yesterday evening. We have two 5k's in December, so we will be working on faster paces, more tempo runs, intervals and speedwork for the month of November. One longer run on the weekends to build endurance.

I will be focusing harder on diet, there is ALOT of room for improvement there. And I am improving his diet as well - promoting more healthy alternatives to his favorites - for example: instead of a honeybun, he gets a banana. Instead of fruit loops he gets a multi grain cereal with fresh strawberries. Instead of goldfish or pringles, I'm giving him almonds, pistachios or carrot slices - all the while explaining how this is going to help him feel better, run better. I explain (from learning it here on shapefit  - how food fuels your body and it all depends on what you give it to run on - junk = poor performance, tiredness, lack of energy / healthy = high performance, tons of energy, healthy body. :D

Hope everyone has a healthy, happy weekend!
oh yeah....happy halloweeny!!

Its also funny that after eating healthy for awhile you end up craving healthy food and the junk tastes like....well junk.

this is true. :D

Saturday's workout:
3.5 mile hill run .5 cooldown walk/jog - total miles 4.0
Really trying to work on increasing overall pace speed. You have to train your muscles and your body to run fast.

Ran solo. Little man was taking a break, and very into a serious battle on his Nintendo - so I didn't push him. The last thing I want to happen is to make him feel like running is a chore or something he "has" to do. BUT, I told him that I still needed to run, he could run with me another day.

Did some core work afterwards.

love this:
"We run, not because we think it is doing us good, but because we enjoy it and cannot help ourselves...The more restricted our society and work become, the more necessary it will be to find some outlet for this craving for freedom. No one can say, 'You must not run faster than this, or jump higher than that.' The human spirit is indomitable."
-Sir Roger Bannister, first runner to run a sub-4 minute mile

And on the lighter side of things:
"The only reason I would take up jogging is so that I could hear heavy breathing again."
- Erma Bombeck

Have a great week everyone!

Trying to start the month out right. Went back to using the FitTracker food tracker. Geez...what an eye opener! I can see already where I need to improve...dang avocados! Shouldn't have added butter on cous cous (seriously, I like it without it...don't no why I felt the need to add it). And i need to cut out the salted peanuts and go back to almonds, pistachios.
can you say ... wake up call?!!!
grocery store (Walmart) completely took off the shelves all of their FF Greek yogurts - GONE! All they have is the sugar laden, fake sugar, low fat stuff now. I am really peeved. Unfortunately it was probably due to low sales. In this area of the country, I don't think FF greek anything is going to be a big seller. And it is hard for alot of cash strapped folks to justify spending $4.00 for a small carton of healthy yogurt when right next to it is a "name brand" alternative touting its "low-fat" or "light" versions at $2.00 a carton, especially when most of the general public doesn't really understand what true healthy food is, and is easily swayed by the lure of saving money and still buying what they believe is good for them. Okay...I'm ranting now...I will stop.

Sundays workout:

Played several rounds of kickball with boy. Wow, I'm sore today! Kicking the ball, then sprinting and trying to dodge the ball being thrown at me was more of a workout than I thought! Call it an interval workout of sorts.
What pleased me to no end was the fact that I was able to run the bases, go after balls, sprint to homebase - and it didn't kill me, in fact, I handled it quite well - I swear i felt like I was 12 again, on the playground. but 48 yr. old legs today are saying "I think not - silly woman...we will make you pay for that..." lol!

Doing better today on food :

After 2 meals I'm at 657 calories
42 g. - protein
72 g. - carbs
21 g. - fat
% for the day so far:
protein 46% / carbs 45% / fat 29%
I can still have a little over 1000 calories and stay within Goal calories of 1690 for the day. :D

okay, this is where it gets hard for me. Meal planning is SO important.
Any good ideas for a filling evening meal that doesn't exceed 8 fat grams?

thanks Allison, that sounds good. I need to get some ground turkey meat. I have some 80/20 hamburger meat that I drain and rinse - guess I could use that til I get some turkey. Has anyone ever cooked with ground chicken meat before?

Started out the morning with good intentions. I had told son last night that we would for sure run in the a.m. Got up at 5:50 a.m., went out in the driveway to check the weather (it's been raining) and saw that although the air was heavy with mist and humidity, it was not raining - so went back in woke up the boy and we got dressed, did some "wake up" stretches (arms over head, bend to one side then the other) then we did some jumping jacks. I got ready to go out, opened the garage door and stopped in tracks...our neighbors LARGE boxer had escaped from their yard (they leave early for work, so no one is home) and he is standing in driveway barking and growling, standing in a very aggressive stance - no way am I going out there! Really ticked me off - totally ruined plans. This dog has gotten out before, and I have watched him jump BACK over his fence into his yard. We have told our neighbors about this before, but either they don't care, or they are unable to keep him contained in their yard. I don't want to call animal control, but he is a danger to himself and others with his aggressive manner.
ANYWAY...I didn't get to run, but I got son on the treadmill and I stood by him and increased his speed for 1 minute, then back down for 1 minute, back up, etc. did 4 HIIT type intervals - I swear I felt just like Jillian Michaels, minus all the yelling. Hopefully I can get a quick HIIT dreadmill workout in this evening.
There is a 5k race this Saturday that we might run. Weather should be stellar for it - clear sunny skies, temps in the high 30's, low 40's - AWESOME! :D

Well, workout didn't happen for me today. I went to son's after school "superbowl" football game. Sat in the bleachers in the cold wind and mist for 2 hours..but I was a proud parent. son plays snare drum in the jr. high band, he did great. I love school football and hearing the bands play. fingers are still thawing out as I type this. I'm totally a "band mom" taking pictures and videos every time they play a song! husband wanted him to play football, but he always wanted to play drums. I remember hubby asking him "don't you wanna play football son?" and he rolls his eyes and says "uh...no...I'm in THE BAND!" ...cool.

:D Both brothers were in the band as well as sister. I didn't get to be in a band because the high school I had to go to did not have a band (tiny texas town - no football team either :( ) - so I am living out "band" experience through son. LOL.
They are doing a performance on Saturday night where they get to march out onto the football field for the first time to perform. He is PAST excited about it! And i can't wait either - gotta charge the camcorder and camera's batteries for sure!!! I plan to make a total nuisance of myself taking pictures and video. He, of course, will be mortified and probably pretend he doesn't know me...

Well, a bit of good news:
2 lb. loss this week.  It's so weird. I didn't get to run or workout that much this week, BUT I used the food tracker and really paid attention to what I ate - wala! lost weight!
Now if I can just bring it all together and stay with it, hopefully I will continue to chip away at this "work in progress". :D
