Re: Just starting
Did cardio this morning. first 30 min session on the rteadmill I covered 1.80. Not Impressive, but that was best 30 min distance since starting the gym. The next 30 min I did at the pace of first 30 minute session last week. It felt like a stroll in the park. heart rate is staying around 130 now while on the treadmill. body is starting to adjust.

That is awesome! Setting a goal is a great motivation tool. And never say never! You are on the right track and making great progress -EdgarHF wrote: goal is definitely to run a 5K outdoors on real ground. I want to gradually crank it up to without injurying myself. I will never be able to match Marine Corps times for three miles, but I would like someday in the future get a passing score for the Marine Corps test, which was under 28 minutes when I served.
see? great work!!!EdgarHF wrote: first 30 min session on the rteadmill I covered 1.80. Not Impressive, but that was best 30 min distance since starting the gym.

Re: Just starting
muscles still feel worn and tired today. I am going to feel guilty if I do not work out. I will also feel stupid if I injure myself. I am going to compromise. This is normal time to go to the gym so I am go to go out for a long walk instead and do the same tomorrow. I will be back in the gym Thursday with a passion.
I joined the Chicago Area Runners Association yesterday and when I go back to work tomorrow I am going to ask permission to rearrange work schedule to be able to sign up for a 5K training course that CARA is offering that starts in June.

Re: Just starting
good decision Edgar! Recovery is JUST as important as the workout - it's when the real magic happens (ie metabolism adjusts, muscles rebuild etc.).
You're doing fantastic and already seeing improvements. Delighted for ya!

Re: Just starting
Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I did end up going to the gym but only worked on the upper body. It is legs that need recovery. I then went for a leisurely walk for a hour. Tomorrow, is an off day, but I will still do usual easy lunchtime walk. I work at a desk all day and need some daily activity.

This is a great read!!! Way to go Edgar! It is so cool that you are working a plan so you feel better. I am going to use that work out plan, thank you for sharing!
You did not say if you have to check your blood glucose levels or if you have an eating plan. Sodium and prepared foods (mixes) can really affect the reading on your scale because of water retention.
I am so glad you bought those new shoes, what a difference huh?
Keep up the good work and hang in there!

Re: Just starting
Yes I do check levels daily. The last few months glucose levels have been excellent. I was taking 850mg metformin twice daily. Based on last microalb/creat ratio was 5.6 and doctor lowered metformin dose to 500mg. As for diet that is a work in progress. I was taught in diabetes class to count carbs. That is not going to be enough now and I have the past few days been reading about nutrition. I do promise I will start a diet journal on this site in the next few days. Hopefully there may be some other diabetics who use this site who can give me some tips. I really was not going to go into diabetes in this journal. I had only mentioned it earlier in answer to a question about why I had suddenly decided to start exercising after years of inactivity. But, perhaps it would be more helpful to me and perhaps others if I were more open about it. By the way, today is a scheduled rest day so outside of lunchtime walk I did not work out. I did, though, sign up for that 5K training course I mentioned previously.fooddiaryuser wrote:You did not say if you have to check your blood glucose levels or if you have an eating plan. Re: Just starting
Just a quick note before going to bed. I just got back from the gym. Did strength training and noticed how quickly the session went by. It seems to be getting easier but I know there are still going to be hard times.

Re: Just starting
Presumably when you mentioned "Creat" on the part about test results, you meant Creatinine. The figure of 5.6 is quite high, though of course 10 is a toxic level, so 5.6 isn't hideous, but ideally the upper limit is 1.2 ng/dl for men, in a normal range, so it shouldn't be quite that high.
Creatine ingestion itself comes form about 2g in Meat and Fish daily, which may be impacting, but if you find that is causing elevation of Creatinine, then remove some Flesh from the diet and use other things ike Soy, products and Legumes. perhaps some low Fat Cheese here and there and maybe Peanuts too, so you get Amino Acids in other ways, without as much Creatine ingestion.
The Doctor should be able to tell you if not so already, if Creatine in your diet is having a serious adverse efect on Creatinine levels anyway.
As for the exercise, you just need time to adjust, tne it gets a little more manageable.

Re: Just starting
I actually pasted the wrong line from last lab. I meant to post Hemoglobin A1C which was 5.9 this time. Thanks though for that info on creatinine. I did not know what that was. What did confuse me is that doctor penned in the word normal on the microalb/creat line so I confused it with the A1C. By the way , actual creatinine level was 0.80. It is now time to get body to the gym. I will be back later to post a journal entry.Boss Man wrote:Presumably when you mentioned "Creat" on the part about test results, you meant Creatinine. Re: Just starting
0.8 is great. range should be 0.6-1.2 ng/dl, so you're fine.
I believe for Hemoglobin normal average is about 14, but I'm not entirely sure what your test entailed, so I don't know if I'm referring to the right thing. I'm not massively familiar with the Hemo test.

Re: Just starting
I just got this from wikipedia for Hemoglobin A1C, "In general, the reference range (that found in healthy persons), is about 4%–5.9%".Boss Man wrote:0.8 is great. range should be 0.6-1.2 ng/dl, so you're fine.

Re: Just starting
Did strength training today and light cardio from time to time between exercises to keep the heart pumping. I felt great afterward. I wore a tshirt today that I could never wear because it fit me too tight. It fits me nicely now.
