I'm of the opinion that as long as your pulse rate is elevated at the same level for each workout the calories consumed will be the same.

What can happen is that your body gets more efficient at the exercise and you need to increase your work rate to achieve the same pulse rate, but as long as your pulse rate is elevated at the same level you will be consuming calories at the same level.
