Do you think heavy squats would be the best exercise for jumping? I don't. I think any strengthening exercise needs to be similar to the jumping in its rapid accelerations. I think it is necessary to work the fast twitch muscles to the greatest extent possible through an action that mimics the jumping.swanso5 wrote:there's a lot more to jumping then simply jumping and training for it is best done by increasing strength over everything else, not plyometrics
Pneumatic leg press machines allow fast motions without picking up inertia. Squats and conventional leg press machines would not allow that kind of action.
I still think it falls back to the basic premise that you work your muscles the way you intend to use them. If you want to run fast, then you do sprints; if you want endurance, then you run long distances, etc.
